Silvana Tirinzoni and her team from Switzerland took victory in the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown at the Swift Current Curling Club with an 8-1 win in Sunday's final over Winnipeg's Abby Ackland, who had Swift Current's Kelly Schafer at third.

The game started tight with the two teams trading singles and blanks for a 1-1 tie after four ends, but Tirinzoni picked up five in the fifth end to blow the game open, and a steal of two in the sixth wrapped up the victory for the three-time defending world women's champions, who received the first prize cheque of $12,000.

"It was a tough game, both teams played so well in the first couple of ends and then we got the break in the fifth," said Alina Paetz, who throws fourth stones for the Swiss team. "We had so many good shots in the first four ends, so we were lucky to get that five-ender."

The victory was Tirinzoni's fourth tour event win of this season and they were coming off winning the first event in this season's Grand Slam of Curling just last weekend in North Bay, Ontario. Paetz added that her team enjoys playing in Canada.

"The people are great, the organization is great, and this week was phenomenal" she said. "The people are so nice, and there's lots of people who cheer for us. We don't have that back in Switzerland, so it's pretty nice."

Tirinzoni and Paetz were joined by Carole Howald and Briar Huerlimann on the front end. Howald was an alternate for Binia Feltscher's Swiss team that captured gold at the World Women's Curling Championship the last time it was held in Swift Current in 2016.

The next big event for the Swift Current Curling Club will be the second annual IG Wealth Management Western Showdown, which will feature some of the top men's teams in the world including defending Olympic gold medallist Niklas Edin from Sweden, last year's champion Kevin Koe and former provincial champion Steve Laycock and his new team from Manitoba. The event runs at the InnovationPlex curling arena from October 28-30.
