Closing of the VI Winter Olympic games at Oslo; the Edmonton Mercurys take home Canada's only Gold Medal, in Ice Hockey.

 

1964

Cassius Clay (who later changed his name to Muhammad Ali) became the world heavyweight boxing champion for the first time by defeating Sonny Liston in Miami Beach.

 

1971

Ontario Hydro opens $75 million Pickering nuclear power plant; has been the largest single producer of electricity in the world.

Also the first commercial nuclear power station in Canada.

 

1971

Boston Bruins left-winger Johnny Bucyk, center Ed Westfall and defenseman Ted Green scored 3 goals in 20 seconds against the Vancouver Canucks; an NHL record.

 

1981

Boston Bruins play the Minnesota North Stars in the NHL's most penalized game - 84 penalties, for a total of 392 minutes.

 

1991

Silver speculator Bruce McNall, hockey star Wayne Gretzky and entertainer John Candy jointly buy CFL Toronto Argonauts; Gretzky and Candy are later financially embarrassed by the bankruptcy of McNall.

 

1994

The movie "8 Seconds" debuts, with Luke Perry playing rodeo hero Lane Frost, and Brooks & Dunn, Vince Gill, Karla Bonoff and McBride & The Ride all appearing on-screen. An MCA soundtrack features Reba McEntire and David Lee Murphy, among others

 

2005

Dennis Rader was arrested for the BTK serial killings that terrorized Wichita, Kan. (He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 life prison terms.)

 

National news headlines this morning: The chief of animal training at SeaWorld said there was no sign of problems with a killer whale before it killed a trainer in front of horrified onlookers in Orlando.

Veteran trainer Dawn Brancheau (bran-CHOH') was rubbing the whale named Tilikum after a noontime show Wednesday when the whale grabbed her and pulled her into the water, killing her.

Carrot Top –45- His comedy routine incorporates dozens of props stored in large trunks on stage; his prop jokes commonly consist simply of him pulling out a prop, describing it in a one-liner, and tossing it away.
