Reid Duke scored twice and had an assist in leading Brandon to a 4-1 win over the Broncos in Swift Current's home opener on Saturday night.

The Wheat Kings paid Swift Current back for spoiling Brandon's home opener on Friday night.

"We're disappointed with the way things went tonight after last night's pretty exciting win to start the season," said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. "We played pretty good D last night as far as giving them outside shots. We were able to score one to tie it up and I think that got us into the game."

"Tonight we never got to that point. We never found our way to get into the game. We were missing out on a lot of details."

While Brandon never blew the game open, the Broncos didn't ever make a real strong push to take back control.

"We made some mistakes tonight that are just uncharacteristic," Smith said. "It's not just rookies. You can't count on your goalie to bail you out every single shift."

Landon Bow made 36 saves on 39 shots before being pulled for an extra attacker late. He stopped 89 total shots over the two games this weekend and helped Swift Current hold Brandon to 0 for 12 on the power play.

"Well there's no doubt who was the top player tonight and last night for us," Smith noted. "He played very strong for us and played like a 20-year-old goalie should. The penalty kill starts with him. He sucked in rebounds, he deflected pucks over and outside so he got whistles. Our penalty kill is pretty strong. There's desperation as penalty killers too and I saw that this weekend."

Bow came back from Anaheim Ducks camp with confidence and was back in the form that had him on top of the WHL goaltender statistics in the first half of last season.

"It was a hard fought weekend for sure," Bow said. "We put a hard effort in and made sure we were battling. We have a young lineup so there's still some guys shaking off their first season nerves. I think we did pretty good to get the two points in Brandon."

Rihards Bukarts beat Bow with a well placed shot late in the first period to give the Wheat Kings the lead. They extended that with goals by Colton Waltz and Duke in the second period.

Brandon never ran away with the game but the Broncos didn't put significant or sustained pressure on the Wheat Kings with their offensive attack.

"We're not a room full of 50 goal scorers," Smith said. "You've got to score by committee at this level. You've got to get pucks to the net and just even getting towards the net."

"We missed the net a ton tonight. The glass got a good work out. Look at our goal we shot it off the pad for a big rebound. We're going to have to do it the hard way at times. You can't score if you don't hit the net and you can't score if you don't go to the net."

Connor Chaulk scored his first career WHL goal for the Broncos late in the third period on a power play. Tyler Steenbergen made a strong play off the wall an drove the slot to create a rebound that Chaulk put home.

"Just was in the right spot," Chaulk said. "It was nice to get the monkey off my back early in the year."

Both former Regina Pat Canadian teammates Chaulk and Tyler Adams scored for the Broncos this weekend. Chaulk also scored Friday's shootout winner.

Steenbergen was in the lineup for Swift Current despite being knocked out of the game by a Waltz hit late in Friday's first period.

The Broncos are off until next Friday when they visit Red Deer.
