It will be an early start this morning for the Innovation Credit Union Wildcats as they begin play at the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament hosted by the Notre Dame Hounds.

The tournament was created in 2017 in honour of Mandi Schwartz, a former Notre Dame student and hockey player who went on to play NCAA hockey with the Yale Bulldogs. She was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008 and passed away in 2011. The event has grown to become the top female U18 AAA tournament in Western Canada.

The Wildcats will face the Calgary Fire for an 8:00am face-off in Milestone this morning and then face the Winnipeg Avros tonight at 6:00pm. They’ll wrap up the round robin tomorrow afternoon against the South Alberta Hockey Academy and the playoffs begin on Saturday.

Legionnaires know Circle K Classic opponents, face Moose Jaw tonight

The Home Hardware Legionnaires know their schedule for the Circle K Classic in Calgary. They’ll open the tournament against the Calgary Buffaloes on December 27, then they’ll take on the Chicago Mission the following day before wrapping up the round-robin against Rink Kelowna on December 29. 

The Legionnaires will host the Moose Jaw WINMAR Warriors in league action tonight at 8:00 from InnovationPlex.

In AA hockey last night, the Source for Sports U18 Broncos beat Lumsden/Bethune 3-1, and the Pure Chem U15 Broncos beat the Moose Jaw Warriors 3-2.

In the WHL, Kai Uchacz had a pair of goals as Red Deer beat Medicine Hat 5-2, and Jake Chiasson scored the game winner with 2:09 left in regulation as Brandon edged Prince Albert 4-3.

Petey scores in OT again as Canucks beat Sharks

Elias Pettersson scored the overtime winner for the second straight game as the Vancouver Canucks edged the San Jose Sharks 6-5 in NHL action last night. 

Elsewhere, Rasmus Anderson had the game-winning goal and two assists as the Calgary Flames beat Minnesota 5-3, and Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had two goals each as Edmonton hammered Arizona 8-2.

Toronto hosts the LA Kings, Winnipeg travels to St. Louis and Ottawa heads to Dallas in tonight's NHL action.

Raptors rout shorthanded Lakers

Pascal Siakam had 25 points and 10 rebounds as the Toronto Raptors routed the shorthanded LA Lakers 126-113. The Lakers were without stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis due to illness and injury.

Toronto improved to 13-12 with the win.

MPP takes Northern Star Award

Canadian women's hockey star Marie Philip-Poulin has been named this year's winner of the Nothern Star Award, formerly the Lou Marsh Award, as Canada's athlete of the year as voted by sports journalists.

Poulin captained Team Canada to gold medals at the Winter Olympics in Beijing back in February and at the World Women's Hockey Championship this summer in Denmark.
