1868
The Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing due process and the equal protection of the laws to former slaves, was declared in effect.

1914
A.W. Dingman gave their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Connaught a tour of the Dingman discovery well in southern Alberta. On his order, the valve on the well was turned on and a jet of gasoline rose an estimated forty feet into the air. Although some of the party found the noise deafening, Princess Patricia found the sight beautiful, admiring the way that the iridescent drops of gasoline fell to the earth. Mr. Dingman requested that everyone extinguish their smoking materials but reassured the party that they were quite safe and should only begin to run if they saw him do so.

1945
A US Army B-25 bomber crashes into the Empire State Building between the 78th and 79th floors. An engine plunges down an elevator shaft, sparking a fire in the basement. Eleven people in the building are killed, in addition to the three man bomber crew.

1976
The Tangshan earthquake measuring between 7.8 and 8.2 moment magnitude flattens Tangshan in the People's Republic of China, killing 242,769 and injuring 164,851.
It is the worst earthquake of the 20th century in terms of death toll.

2007
Faith Hill lectures a fan at the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana, for grabbing the crotch of husband Tim McGraw during a concert. Video of the event is captured on a cell phone and posted on the Internet


Just 11 days ago, Casey Anthony walked out of a Florida jail and made a carefully orchestrated escape from the media mob that had followed her throughout her daughter's murder case.

Now Anthony wants the attention back. According to several rumors now floating around, including one from Nancy Grace, Anthony and her team of lawyers are seeking at least $1.5 million from television networks interested in landing her first post-penitentiary interview.
