The City of Swift Current underwent major changes with public transit this year, and one of those changes was its operators, after council approved a new two-year agreement with the Saskatchewan Abilities Council for the operations of both public transit and paratransit.

"The Abilities Council has really done a great job of running the paratransit side, and we have total confidence in them moving over to regular transit," said Mitch Minken, General Manager of Infrastructure and Operations for the City of Swift Current. "The efficiencies that will be gained by having those two systems integrated will be something that will help us a lot in terms of how we move drivers back and forth, and how we can move users back and forth between the two systems."

Minken added the efficencies will also be helpful as they continue with plans to improve transit service in Swift Current, by introducing a scheduled bus service and bus routes.

"It's a little preliminary just yet to provide a lot of details, but our hope is to improve public transit greatly within Swift Current," he said. "It's taken a little longer than we originally estimated, but we want to try and make sure that we're doing the right things and do a good job of deploying this, rather than rush our way through and then having it not go well. We want to make sure that we are addressing the needs of all of our users."

The Abilities Council has operated the city's paratransit service since 2006, and took over public transit after the Telebus contract expired at the end of March.
