The medal bearers for the Rick Hansen Relay's stop in Swift Current on February 13

In February, Swift Current hosted the Rick Hansen Relay, which celebrated the 25th anniversary of Rick Hansen's "Man in Motion World Tour"

Local "difference makers" were nominated to be medal bearers for the relay, which went through the city and stopped at a celebration inside the Credit Union iplex.

The final medal bearer of the day was Jayci Wittmier, who suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident on her 16th birthday three years ago and had been on a remarkable recovery since.

She said she's hopeful the relay would raise awareness about accessibility for people with disabilities, and possibly help people overcome spinal cord injuries.

"Finding a cure for spinal cord injury is huge not only for me, but for everyone living with a spinal cord injury," Jayci said. "Because, if they do find a cure, it will give people with spinal cord injuries so much more independence."

The relay then continued west where it ended on May 22 in Vancouver, in the same spot and 25 years to the day after Rick Hansen finished his own journey.
