Parts of southwest Saskatchewan were on the chopping block for bus service, as the Saskatchewan Transportation Company announced in the spring it will be cancelling its route from Eastend to Swift Current and Mossbank.

The Crown-owned bus company said the route was one of three in the province they found to be underused, only having about two or fewer passengers per trip.

But many residents of the communities along the route, including Shaunavon and Gravelbourg, tried to do what they could to convince STC to keep the route operational, saying it could isolate their communities. A group of people from Shaunavon went to the Legislature in the fall to meet with the Minister Responsible for STC, Don McMorris, but they were unsuccessful in their attempt to get the government to change their mind.

"We feel that this is a very valuable sevice in this area," said Sharon Zarry of Shaunavon. "We are in a very isolated corner of the province, and the STC is one of our lifelines. If this is taken away from us, I don't knwo what's going to happen to a lot of our people that do require service, but it's something that people rely on in dire times."

The route will be cancelled on New Year's Day.
