Colts dominate Greenall to make football league final
The Colts really are riding again. For the first time since 2019, the Swift Current Comprehensive High School Colts are playing in the 5A 12-A-Side football SHSAA South Rural League championship game. They beat the Greenall Griffins 41-7 in Swift Current on Saturday to secure their spot in the big game. "It feels great," Colts linebacker Jackson Gording-Dovell told the Local Sports Live post-game show on Country 94.1 FM, powered by Original Joe's. "We've worked so hard for this." It's a huge turnaround for the Colts after missing the top four playoff round every year since that 2019 run. "Most people would describe me as kind of an over-communicator and a wordy son of a gun," said Colts Assistant Coach Derek Murdoch. "But I don't really have words for how proud I am right now. Our guys competed like crazy today. "You look out there with their friends and their family, and all the people that they love are here and smiling and happy. Winning at home is obviously great, and now we get a chance to go play for a championship." The Colts have now won four games in a row, including back-to-back victories over the Griffins. Swift Current topped Greenall 30-24 to close out the regular season last week. They got out to another hot start on Saturday afternoon by forcing a Griffins fumble on the first play of their first drive. Jake Woods then opened the scoring with his first of two touchdowns in the game. Woods has now scored ten touchdowns in his last four games, but he also left the game injured in the third quarter. "He's a huge part of our team," Murdoch said. "We'll see where we're at. Cade (Sanderson) took over and did the job for us in a really big way. We're going to figure that all out when we know more." Sanderson also rushed for two touchdowns. His first was a 69-yard burst through the middle that extended Swift Current's lead to 14-0 in the second quarter. "I can't do anything without my O-line," Sanderson said. "Anything I do on the field is because of them. They get all the credit for both touchdowns. The 69-yarder I think it was, I don't think I got touched. I just had to run. They opened a hole great for me. It's all thanks to them." Sanderson ran 24 times for 191 yards on the ground, while Woods carried the ball 18 times for 61 yards. Swift Current prevented Greenall from even crossing midfield for most of the first half. Griffins QB Jake Steranko broke a long run late in the second quarter and then scored their lone touchdown of the game to make things close at halftime. The Colts otherwise smothered the Greenall offence. They only allowed two drives into Swift Current territory, forced two fumbles, and Zachary Dyke returned an interception for a touchdown. "A lot of it is just coaching," said Gording-Dovell. "We've got to thank our coaches for doing the work, watching film, and it's just do your job. If everybody does their job, fills their gaps, and gets in their coverage, that's how we stop the offence." It wasn't a wildly different approach than their strategy in the win over Greenall the previous week. "I don't think we changed a whole lot defensively," Murdoch said. "We repped and repped and repped some of the stuff that they threw at us in their past game last week that we didn't think we were sharp enough with, even though we got the win. I think we did a better job of that." Despite very windy conditions, Colts QB Jaimie Robertson went 5 for 9 passing for 87 yards through the air. "He is my MVP," Sanderson said. "He's come a long way, gained a lot of confidence, making changes on the line, changing protections, calling audibles, making big plays. He's won us the last two games." Colts kicker Kye Griffin was a perfect 5 for 5 on touchdown conversions, hit his only field goal attempt, and scored a rouge off a punt. Swift Current now awaits the winner of the other semifinal between Moose Jaw's Central Collegiate and Weyburn. Central has dominated the South Rural League with an undefeated record, including a 42-0 win over the Colts. "We're not even close to the same team we were when we played them the first time," said Sanderson. "We lost to Peacock before we played them. We were a little bit down. We've come so far. I guarantee we're the most improved team in the league from week one until now. We know they're a good team, but we can play with them."
