This one ugly car made thousands for the SPCA Swift Current
The SPCA Swift Current managed to idle, stall, and roll on again with their first-ever Ugly Car Fundraiser. The shelter spent the last month driving a 1988 Mercury Park Wagon to and from various residences in Swift Current. Upon drop off of the vehicle, they left a "paw-king" ticket informing people of the promotion. By the end of October, they raised over $6,300. Recipients of the car could donate to have it removed, and with any donation over $99, they could choose which home to drop it off at next. Amy Dixon, operations manager for the SPCA Swift Current, had a blast going all over Swift Current. "We had all kinds of donations, but it was just volunteer-based," said Dixon. "So there was no pressure. Honestly, if anybody was not comfortable making a donation, we would just go get the car and move it to another place." The idea for the fundraiser came from Dustin Vipond, one of the co-founding members of the Rogue Cruisers car club. He had previously built the Mercury for the Great BEater Challenge, and was looking to find it a new purpose. That's when he pitched the idea to the SPCA Swift Current. "He offered it to us and kind of came up with the idea, and we just sort of went with it," said Dixon. "It turned out to be a lot of fun." The goal is to bring the Ugly Car Fundraiser back in 2026. Dixon has already been in talks with Vipond about bringing the car back in the summer for a less chilly driving experience. "Thanks to everybody who participated, had a good laugh, shared on social media, and just supported us," said Dixzon. "Thank you for putting up with us."
