Piapot fire burns down trailer, scorches building
The Piapot Fire Department responded to a blaze on Tuesday night that destroyed a camper and damaged a nearby structure. Crews were dispatched around 9 p.m. and arrived to find a fifth-wheel camper trailer fully engulfed in flames, with an adjacent building also on fire. Piapot Fire Department Chief Mark Wasilow said the affected structure was a former home economics classroom from the old Piapot School. “It’s not part of the school — it’s a separate building,” said Wasilow. Firefighters were able to extinguish the structure fire, but the camper trailer was completely destroyed. No injuries were reported. Wasilow thanked the Tompkins Fire Department for their assistance, along with all the local volunteers who responded to the call. The fire was fully extinguished by 11 p.m. The cause remains under investigation.
