SGI urges drivers to prepare for winter roads
With colder weather approaching, Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) is reminding drivers to start preparing for winter driving conditions as part of its October Traffic Safety Spotlight. “You never know when the first snowstorm of the season will hit,” said JP Cullen, Chief Operating Officer of the Auto Fund. “Whether you’re experienced or new to winter driving, a little planning can go a long way in keeping you safe during the blustery months ahead.” SGI advises drivers to install winter tires or use all-weather tires if winter tires are not an option. Vehicles should be equipped with a snow brush, ice scraper, shovel, and emergency kit containing warm clothes, blankets, traction mats, booster cables, a flashlight, flares, matches, a tow rope, food, and a cellphone charger. Drivers are also encouraged to have their vehicles tuned up and ensure block heaters are working properly. Once snow and ice arrive, SGI recommends clearing all snow from vehicles, slowing down, increasing following distances, and avoiding cruise control. Drivers should accelerate and brake gently and exercise extra caution around intersections. Before heading out, motorists are urged to check the Highway Hotline for road conditions and avoid travel when conditions are unsafe. “Winter can be unpredictable. Let’s do what we can to reduce collisions and keep everyone safe,” Cullen said.
