The Swift Current 57's dropped Game 1 of their first-round playoff series with the Regina Red Sox last night at Mitchell Field.

The 57's and Red Sox traded runs throughout the ball game, with Regina ultimately taking the tilt 9-6.

It didn't take the Red Sox long to jump on the board, as a three-hit first inning was capped off by an RBI single to take the 1-0 lead.

Regina extended their lead in the top of the third inning, after a bobbled exchange between first baseman Bo McClintock and pitcher Evan Pontley (below) allowed the first Red Sox runner to reach base.

Back-to-back Regina singles led to a run, before Pontley struck out back-to-back batters. With two outs, the Red Sox rallied with two-straight RBI singles to take the 4-0 lead.

But, the gritty 57's bounced back immediately in the bottom-half of the frame.

Keil Krumwiede singled to open the home-half, before advancing on a wild pitch.

Blake Adams was hit by a pitch to put two men on, before a wild pitch and an error by the third baseman allowed Krumwiede to score from second, Adams to reach third and then race home, and Ruben Rodriquez to make it to first.

However, that 4-2 score wouldn't last long, as the Red Sox put up solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take the 6-2 lead, and chase Pontley from the game.

Pontley's stat line was closed after five frames, allowing six runs on nine hits, while striking out six batters.

Two more 57's runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the fifth to once again trim the deficit to two.

More sloppy Red Sox play allowed the 57's to plate Adams and Krumwiede again. Krumwiede had the lone hit in the inning, a double to centre field, while an error by the second baseman, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk accounted for the rest of the damage.

Swift extended their stretch of unanswered runs to four in the bottom of the seventh inning, tying up the game at 6-6.

With two outs, the 57's loaded the bases on another Regina error, a McClintock single, and a Myles Miller walk.

That brought catcher Ben Komonosky to the plate. He ripped a two-out, bases-loaded single to centre field, scoring Rodriquez and McClintock.

But, the late charge wasn't able to last for the 57's - Regina ripped a two-run homer off reliever Jack Ferguson in the eighth inning and an RBI single off Tommy Steier in the ninth to take the three-run win.

Ferguson was charged with the loss, giving up the two runs on one hit over three innings. Steier struck out three batters over his lone inning of work, allowing two hits and the game's final run.

"They took advantage of some opportunities. We left a couple balls up today and they took advantage of it," said head coach Joe Carnahan following the loss. "We had a lot of opportunities to cash in, and we just didn't quite do it. I mean that's the game of baseball."

"We didn't play our best game, but you got to give them credit, they played a good game. Neither team played their best game - both teams battled, and at the end, they ended up coming out ahead," Carnahan added.

The 57's now face a 1-0 series deficit, a minor task to overcome in the grand scheme of a best-of-five series, when considering the 57's battled back from down 2-0 in the second round of the 2017 playoffs against the Weyburn Beavers to win in five games.

"Like I told these guys before playoffs, you get five games to win three, it doesn't matter the order," Carnahan shared. "In the history of our organization, we've won in every combination possible. That's why it's a five-game series."

The 57's look for a series-evening win tonight in Game 2 against the Red Sox at Mitchell Field. First pitch is 7:05 p.m., with Joey Machado set to take the mound for Swift Current.

"Tomorrow's a new day," said the head coach of the back-to-back WMBL-champion 57's. "We'll keep the same approach we've kept for 49 games now, and see where we end up."
