Saturday at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex marked not only the first game of a home-and-home sweep of the Regina Pats, but also a celebration of a former WHL-winning Broncos team.

The 2017-18 season is the 25th anniversary of the Swift Current Broncos team who, in the 1992-93 season captured the WHL regular season title and eventually an Ed Chynoweth Cup.

That early-90's Swift squad finished the regular season scoring the most goals (384) on their way to a league-best 49-21-2 record.

Into the playoffs the Broncos defeated Medicine Hat 4-2, while sweeping the Regina Pats 4-0 to force a battle for the Ed Chynoweth Cup with the Portland Winterhawks.

The Broncos managed to sneak by the Winterhawks in a seven-game marathon. For forward Andy Schneider, who was named playoff MVP, the series was among one of his fondest memories of life with the Broncos.

"We played Portland in the final... we went three games here in Swift Current - they came in here and they beat us two of the three. So we had to go into probably the hardest rink in the Western League to play in - they had 10,000 fans and we ended up winning the first game there and the third game and we forced a Game 7 and we came back and we won... that was a great accomplishment for us to be able to go into a tough building and bring the series back to Swift Current."

Schneider had 39 points (13 G, 26 A) in 17 post-season games on his way to that MVP award.

"That was a special, special team and special year," he added. "Whenever you go deep into the playoffs like that, you always have some great memories of playing in Swift Current."

The '93 champs had numerous other WHL awards racked up during that memorable year as well:

- Four Broncos Memorial Trophy (regular season MVP): Jason Krywulak
- Bob Clarke Trophy (top scorer): Jason Krywulak (81 G, 81 A - 162 pts in 72 games)
- Brad Hornung Trophy (most sportsmanlike player): Rick Girard

Having captured a league championship and felt the energy in the community, Schneider says in terms of that aspect, this Broncos team is well on their way to generating momentum for a playoff push.

"Last year in the playoffs was the closest that I could ever remember of the city really rallying and the excitement," Schneider said. "The electricity in the city was very similar to that year we went to the Memorial Cup and this year it's the same - hopefully they can keep things going and make a long run in the playoffs this year."

That 1992-93 team was the last Saskatchewan-based team to hoist an Ed Chynoweth Cup, but this current Broncos team is back on the ice Tuesday night looking to build on a strong season and do just that.
