Seven competitors from Swift Current Christian Taekwondo earned some hardware at a recent Alberta Open Online tournament.

The seven earned 8 medals between them; with 5 first-place finishes, 1 second place and 2 third place.

Callie Ebner was the double-winner; earning both first place in a Manual Speed Kicking competition (see video below) and third place in a Recreational Poomsae (Patterns) competition.

Owner, Operator and Head Instructor of Swift Current Christian Taekwondo, Gary Voysey said that he was happy with the result and that it was a fun tournament, even though much of it was different due to COVID-19.

"Since we've started competing, we've just had so many great athletes come through our doors. We consistently finish well. Not always first and second, but generally consistently first, second or third or just really close to the podium."

Sparring tournaments were, of course, a no-go in the COVID-19 pandemic, and so the Alberta Open took place both live and online, with competitors recording and submitting videos of themselves performing their Poomsae routines or other competition components like speed kicking and board breaking.

"This is brand new, totally right across the board. I know when COVID first hit in Europe they went to an online system within a few months doing some Poomsae or forms competitions within a few months. And Canada was following suit."

The final results of the tournament were announced on May 29:

  • Callie Ebner – 1st Place – Manual Speed Kicking
  • Carlos Marques Peralta- 1st Place – Recreational Poomsae
  • Emmett Hardenne- 1st Place – Recreational Poomsae
