This past weekend the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats completed a special road trip to northern Saskatchewan.

Friday after school the midget AAA girls hockey team traveled to Saskatoon to watch the University of Saskatchewan Huskies female hockey team take on UBC. The (12-10) Huskies team features four Diamond Energy Wildcats alumni.

"Hopefully it was a good learning experience for our players," Wildcats head coach Terry Pavely said Monday afternoon. "We have a number of our kids that have committed to play CIS hockey next year. It's nice to give them that experience to see the pace of the game, the competitiveness and the atmosphere."

On Saturday the team traveled to Shellbrook to take part in Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchewan.

"Shellbrook was full of buzz and energy all over the community. We walked into the rink, a good sized rink that is able to seat a lot of people and the lobby was packed with people everywhere. We ended up getting a really good crowd for our game," Pavely told Swift Current Online.

Val Marie product Bryan Trottier was on hand for Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchewan and gave the Wildcats a pregame pep talk.

Taking on the Prince Albert Bears the Wildcats snapped a four-game losing streak defeating the Bears 5-3.

"For us to play a team that battling for first place and get a win in game one, it was a really good start to our weekend. I thought it was the most complete game we played all year," Pavely said.

Swift Current got two goals each from Taylor Lind and Janessa Fournier in the win.

Wildcats netminder Amara Lewendon stopped 32 of the 35 shots she faced picking up her 4th win of the season.

"Our goaltender was excellent that night, she made 3 or 4 game changing saves," Pavely added.

The team spent the night at Waskesiu Lake before continuing their journey north approximately 300 kilometres to Pinehouse.

Sunday's game marked the first time the northern village hosted a midget AAA hockey game.

"We got to the rink and the people there were so hospitable as soon as we pulled up they were there to greet us. You could tell the kids were excited, some of them were asking for autographs," Pavely said. "The people in the crowd were very enthusiastic and the guy doing the announcing was extremely enthusiastic about it. It was a good experience for us."

The Prince Albert Bears were able to exact revenge skating to a 5-1 win over the Diamond Energy Wildcats.

Chloe Smith scored the lone goal in the loss for Swift Current, while Amara Lewendon made 33 saves.

"Our try was there but I think maybe we were tired mentally because we weren't as engaged in the game as we needed to be," the Wildcats head coach stated.

The Wildcats traveled a total of 1615 kilometres on their trek north, and now own an 8-10-6 record and sit in fifth in the league standing.

The team won't hit the ice again until February 11th when they travel to Weyburn to take on the Wings.
