Two games in and two very similar results for Chelsea Carey and her rink from the Glencoe Curling Club at the 2016 Ford World Women’s Curling Championships in Swift Current.

Coming off of a furious comeback yesterday afternoon for an 8-7 extra end win over Lene Nielsen and Team Denmark, Carey once again found herself trailing this morning, this time against 2014 World Champion Binia Feltscher of Switzerland.

Coming up light on a draw against two Switzerland rocks in the 7th end, Carey surrendered control of the game for the time being, falling behind 4-2.

“We actually felt like we played pretty well and then my draw for one hit a spot that we didn’t anticipate. We thought it was close out of my hand and then all of a sudden it was six feet light, which we never saw coming,” Carey said of her light draw.

In the following end, Switzerland appeared set to maintain the momentum built off of the steal. Feltscher’s squad hit everything in sight and forced the Canadians to take a single, giving Switzerland a 4-3 lead and hammer heading to the 9th and that is where everything changed.

For the first time in the game Canada was able to consistently apply pressure on the Swiss and wound up getting a few misses from Switzerland as well.

After Feltscher first stone hung out, running a Canadian rock back onto the button, Carey followed with a draw to the top of the button to lie three all in the four foot.

Feltscher attempted a two foot slash on her own rock but once again her throw hung out and missed everything allowing Carey to steal three and momentum.

With the two point lead, things still got interesting for Team Canada after Amy Nixon’s last throw picked resulting in a failed hit attempt, but Carey stepped up and made the big shot when it counted most.

With Switzerland lying three and the win in theory, Carey managed hit shot stone and roll, leaving Switzerland with only a delicate hit and roll for the win.

Feltscher’s attempt over-curled though failing to remove the stone Carey had just previously threw and resulting in a steal of one for Canada and a 7-4 victory.

“Even when we are struggling we are doing a good job of staying calm, staying together and just kind of grinding through while continuing to make shots and not getting to upset, and that is where you need to be in such a long week so we feel really good about that,” Carey said.

Canada will now have the afternoon off before returning to the Credit Union iPlex at 7:00pm tonight to battle Erika Brown and Team USA.

Also on the ice this morning, Lene Nielsen’s Denmark team picked up their first win with an 8-7 extra end victory over Brown.

This afternoon’s 2:00pm draw will feature Scotland battling Korea, Russia taking on Japan, Finland versus Italy and Sweden against Germany.
