The Herbert Laurels hosted and won the 1A boys SHSAA regional basketball championship on March 20 & 21. They defeated Kerrobert by a score of 101-62. This put them in the final against Wolseley which they won 78-50. They will now advance to the provincial championships, HOOPLA, in Saskatoon on March 27 & 28. The Southwest has two teams who will advance to HOOPLA (the SHSAA provincial basketball championships) in Saskatoon.

The Swift Current Ardens will be going in the 5A girls’ category and the Herbert boys will advance in the 1A boys’ category.  Thanks to both the Laurels and the Ardens for hosting regional tournaments on March 20 & 21.  HOOPLA will start on Thursday, March 26 with the medal matches going on Saturday, March 28.

In 1A boys’ regionals at Herbert, the Laurels started the weekend off with a win over Kerrobert 101-62.  Frank Meyers led the way with 31 pts.  The second game saw Wolseley defeat Thunderchild 77-70.  In the final, Herbert claimed the victory 78-50 over Wolseley and captured the  regional championship.  The Laurels will go into HOOPLA ranked as the #2 seed in the province behind #1 Coronach.

The Swift Current Ardens basketball team hosted the SHSAA 5A girls regional on March 20 & 21. They hosted 6 other teams from Saskatoon and Prince Albert. The girls opened with a win on Friday over Saskatoon Centennial 58-50. They followed this with a win on Saturday over Saskatoon St. Joseph's 61-48. The Ardens then lost to Saskatoon Holy Cross in the final 80-27 but will advance to HOOPLA on March 26-28. The Ardens hosted a seven team regional with teams from Saskatoon and Prince Albert.  The Ardens got off to a great start on Friday night by beating Saskatoon Centennial 58-50. High scorer for the Ardens was Katie Darlington-Kuebler with 17 pts.  The Ardens second game on Saturday afternoon in the semi saw them take on Saskatoon St. Joseph’s.  The Ardens moved into the final with a 61-48 win over St. Joe’s.  Jaide Addai led all Ardens’ scorers with 23 pts.  The final game of the tournament saw the Ardens take on the #1 seed of the tournament – Holy Cross Crusaders.  The Ardens came up short against the very strong team from Holy Cross dropping an 80-27 decision.
Four teams advanced from the regional in Swift Current to HOOPLA. The seeds will be as follows:
#1 north seed Saskatoon Holy Cross
#2 north seed Swift Current Ardens
#3 north seed Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls
#4 north seed Saskatoon St. Joseph’s Guardians.
The Ardens will now take on the #3 seed from the South regional – Notre Dame.  

Other Southwest teams taking part in regionals included Herbert girls, Shaunavon boys and girls, Maple Creek girls and Swift Current Colts:
Herbert girls – at Kenaston.  The Laurels won the first game 47-41 over Gladmar.  In the final against Kenaston, they lost 64-35.  
Shaunavon Shadows – at Birch Hills.  The Shadows lost to Beauval in the first game 84-75 but won the consolation side with a win over Indian Head 82-81.
Shaunavon Silhouettes – at Regina Harvest City.  The Silhouettes beat Paradise Hills in game 1 by a score of 48-44.  In the final against Harvest City, the Silhouettes came up short 87-49.
Maple Creek girls – at Caronport.  The Lady Rebels lost to Unity in game 1 by a score of 49-32 and followed this up with a win on the consolation side 34-19 over Dalmeny.  
Swift Current Colts – at Saskatoon.  Colts had a tough weekend dropping the first game to Saskatoon Bishop Mahoney 86-55 then losing to PA St. Mary’s 108-94 on the consolation side.
