Allen Cup

Stewart Valley's Curtis Austring is relishing his second Allan Cup victory after his Bentley Generals went undefeated while hosting the national senior hockey championship.

Austring first won the Allan Cup in 2009 during his first year with the Generals and appreciates this one a little more.

"For me it was my first year so I didn't really have much to compare it to," Austring said. "This go around I can appreciate more the journey having been to the Allan Cup final a couple times and lost. I'm really savouring this opportunity to get that trophy back along with my teammates."

Interview with Curtis Austring"Really that's the fun part of the journey is playing hard with your teammates and being successful at the end of the year."

Bentley beat Clarenville 3-0 in the championship game to claim the Allan Cup.

Austring had 3 points in 4 tournament games and had 12 points in 8 games at the Alberta Senior AAA provincials.

"The coaches have given me an opportunity to play with some good players," Austring said. "Playing some key minutes mostly on the power play and things like that. In that regard I've been fortunate enough to produce and contribute offensively to the team. With our hockey club really there is so much depth."

He credits the organization with running their senior team like a professional organization.

"They try to treat you just like you were a professional hockey player and give you everything you need to be successful on the ice," Austring said. "We get taken care of very well."

The Stewart Valley product played against some familiar faces during the Allan Cup tournament in their opening game against the Rosetown Redwings. The team included southwest products like JJ and Luke Hunter, Evan Schafer and former Bronco Brent Twordik.

"I was nervous and stressing about that for a couple of weeks before because I knew their roster and knew they were a talented hockey club," Austring noted. "It's always difficult in a certain sense playing against former teammates because you have a lot of respect for them... I'm glad we came out on top and I appreciate they after the fact were congratulating us and wishing us well. It was good to see some familiar faces and old friends... and competing against them one more time."

Austring played his junior hockey for the Regina Pats and Medicine Hat Tigers before suiting up for four years at the University of Saskatchewan.

He intends to play at least one more season with the Generals though family factors could impact his decision as he and his wife are expecting their second child.
