Betties MindFox celebrate

Swift Current's Redneck Betties are all over the nominations for the Derby Frontier 2013 Best of Saskatchewan Roller Derby Awards.

Voting is underway at www.derbyfrontier.com with fourteen members of the organization up for awards.

This is the first year ever for a vote such as this in Saskatchewan.

"When we first started they laughed at us because we were considered an old team," said Trixie Vixen. "A lot of us are moms and in our mid to late 30s. The fact that we're getting nominated at our age and just what we've persevered through in the last three to four years I think is absolutely amazing."

Vixen was nominated for both jammer of the year and blocker of the year.

"When I started derby my husband laughed at me and said you're going to get creamed out there," she said. "The fact that I'm nominated for blocker obviously means I'm doing my job and keeping either the girl behind me or knocking them out of bounds so that's pretty cool."

The jammer nomination was a bit of a pleasant surprise.

"I don't jam all the time," Vixen said. "I kind of get put into strategic places so I'm out there a little bit but not in a regular rotation so that one was really kind of an honour for me."

Dominate Trax was nominated for fresh meat or rookie of the year. She has really enjoyed becoming a part of the team.

"It ended up being really fun and awesome," she said. "It's really changed my life. It's another family, an awesome sport and a fun way to get in shape."

The off-track officials also received recognition like Tracy Prang aka Dolly ParDDon.

"I love working with the Betties," she noted. "They are an amazing group of women. It's just my way of being involved and it's fantastic fun so it's really awesome to be nominated.
