Swift Current's Parker Bloom and Team Sask were crowned as the second-best 17U provincial squad in the country over the weekend.

Bloom was one of six southwest athletes at the 2018 Canada Cup in Richmond, BC, which hosted teams from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick across four divisions.

He and Sask Green 17U worked a 3-1 record in the round robin of the 18U Men's Division 2, which was made up of more 17U and 16U squads than actual 18U rosters.

Sask Green 17U opened with a four set victory over Team Alberta 16U Blue (25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23), and followed that up with a three-set sweep of Team BC Blue (25-15, 25-9, 25-20).

Bloom and Team Sask suffered their first loss in a five-set marathon with Team Alberta 16U Black (25-15, 25-27, 23-25, 25-22, 11-15), but bounced back with a dominant four-set match against Team Manitoba 2 (25-15, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17).

Into the quarter-finals, Sask Green 17U continued on cruise control with a four-set W against Team Ontario Red Leknois (25-10, 16-25, 25-22, 25-22).

The semis brought sweep number two for Bloom and Team Sask in a revenge match against Team Alberta 16U Black. After falling in five sets in the round robin, Sask handily battered the Alberta side 25-10, 25-14, 25-14.

Sask closed their Canada Cup run on the wrong side of a back-and-forth Division 2 final.

They dropped a five-set thriller to Team Ontario Red Delaney (25-18, 12-25, 25-22, 24-26, 8-15).

The rest of the Swift Current Comp contingent at the Canada Cup included Colts' Dane Wright (Sask Green 18U Men's) and Clay Thierman (Sask White 16U Men's), as well as Ardens' Josie Calwell (Sask White 18U Women's), Brielle Wall (Sask White 18U Women's), and Avery Tonnies (Sask Green 16U Women's)

-----

Dane Wright:

Wright and Team Sask's Division 1 Men's team went 0-4 in the round robin, and was swept in the A-side quarters by Team Ontario Black.

A B-side semi win over Team BC Red and a B-side final loss to Team Atlantic (New Brunswick) spelled a sixth-place finish for Wright and the Men's senior team.

-----

Clay Thierman:

Thierman and Team Sask's youngest team was an even 2-2 in the round robin in Division 2.

They defeated Team Manitoba 2 and Team BC Blue, and lost to Team Alberta 16U Black and Team BC Blue.

They were swept by the eventual champs Team Ontario Red Delaney in the quarters.

Thierman and the 16U squad finished in sixth place after a win over Team Manitoba 2 in the B-side semis and a loss to Team Ontario Red Leknois in the fifth-place game.

-----

Josie Calwell, Brielle Wall:

Calwell, Wall, and Sask White earned a 1-2 round robin record with a opening win over Team Nova Scotia, and losses to Team Ontario Black and Team BC Red.

Into playoffs, Sask White was swept in the round of 16 by Team Alberta 17U, dropping to the second tier.

A 3-2 loss to Sask Green, as well as back-to-back three-set wins over Team Nova Scotia and Team Manitoba 1 meant a seventh-place finish thanks to points for and against.

-----

Avery Tonnies:

Tonnies and Sask Green, one of two 16U teams from the province, went 1-3 in Division 2 group play.

They had a win over Team Alberta Black 16U but suffered three straight losses against Team Ontario Red Venn, Team BC Blue, and Team Ontario Neilson.

Into playoffs, Sask Green defeated Manitoba, and lost to Team Ontario Red Venn again to drop to the B-side.

They lost in the B-side semi to Team Alberta White 15U, but defeated Team Manitoba 2 for the seventh-place finish.
