Landon Bow made 53 saves and 3 more in the shootout as the Swift Current Broncos spoiled Brandon's home opener on Friday night with a 2-1 road win.

Tyler Adams scored for Swift Current on a late first period power play and his former Regina midget teammate Connor Chaulk added the shootout winner as they picked up a victory in their WHL debuts.

Bow was the first star as he gave the skilled Wheat Kings very little to shoot at.

"When a guy is coming down on you and he's got the upper hand you just give him what your goalie can handle," said Broncos assistant coach Jamie Heward. "If you do give up a shot and there is a rebound you have to clear and you have to make sure there's no second and third attacks."

"I thought we did a good job eliminating high plays at the blue line. I just thought our guys did a fantastic job making sure they were responsible and clogging things up."

The Broncos weren't necessarily happy giving up 54 shots and yet time felt they approached things the right way with a shorthanded lineup against a deep offensive team.

"I thought our guys handled things very well tonight," Heward said. "Yeah there were some break downs we gave up 54 shots. If it does happen you have to make sure they're shots maybe from the outside and not second or third good quality opportunities."

With a roster full of rookies or inexperienced players the coaching staff was impressed with their composure late in the game. Young guys like Chaulk, Adams and Brandan Arnold were playing significant minutes with the game on the line and delivered.

"We talked with a lot of those guys coming into training camp and explained their responsibilities," Heward said. "(Coach Lamb's) philosophy is you have to be ready at all times. You've got to be ready to make sure you can step in."

"Are we going to play those guys on the first line all year? Absolutely not, but they've got to be able to contribute every single night. When you take a rookie like Adams and Chaulk, one gets a goal and the other scores the winner in the shootout, that says a lot about their character."

Swift Current went 1 for 3 on the power play while holding Brandon to 0 for 6. That includes a 4 on 3 power play in overtime.

"We've gone over a lot of video on it," Heward noted. "It's hard to do penalty kill because obviously in practice you're going against your own guy and you know what your own guys are going to do. The premise is the same. Straight lines back and forth and blocking shots. Making sure you're giving your goaltender an opportunity to make the right save."

"You've got to allow your goaltender to battle and help you out. He is your best penalty killer."

The two teams play again Saturday in Swift Current. With a similar lineup likely without a now injured Tyler Steenbergen they can't change the game plan.

"We're going to have to approach it the same way," Heward said. "We're going to have to battle every single second we're on the ice. We're going to have to emulate what we did tonight. Yes we gave up 54 shots but we're playing a system that will allow us to be in the game every single night."

Steenbergen joins Cole Johnson, Andreas Schumacher and Jordan Harris on the injured list. Scott Feser, Cavin Leth, Calvin Spencer and Ryan Sokoloski were back in the lineup on Friday despite being banged up in pre-season.

Swift Current is still also without star sniper Jake DeBrusk who is at Boston's NHL camp.

Brandon was missing John Quenneville and Jayce Hawryluk to NHL camps and lost Tim McGauley to a third period injury.

A BBQ and plenty of indoor activities start at 4:30pm in the Credit Union iPlex on Saturday for Swift Current's home opener. Our broadcast kicks off at 6:30pm on The Eagle 94.1 FM.
