A back and forth affair got away from the Broncos late as they fell 8-3 in Brandon.
Tim McGauley's goal at 11:17 of the third period pulled the Wheat Kings ahead, but it wasn't until a few minutes later that the floodgates opened. Ivan Provorov's wrist shot somehow eluded Landon Bow and Brandon piled on three more goals in the final five minutes.
"The score really wasn't indicative of the way the game was going," said Broncos Associate Coach Josh Dixon. "Very close for fifty minutes."
"We were happy with a number of things that our guys did... just a couple of little mistakes and they're a very good transition team. They have a lot of fire power and can make you pay when you make mistakes."
The Broncos were able to come from behind twice in the game. Down 2-0 early, goals by Jake DeBrusk and Coda Gordon evened the score. DeBrusk extended his goal scoring streak to four games. He has eight points over that stretch.
Early in the third period Carter Rigby's first goal as a Bronco tied the game up again and it appeared the two teams would battle down to the wire.
Jordan Papirny stopped 23 of the 26 Swift Current shots, while Bow allowed 8 goals on 42 shots. He appeared frustrated late as the game got away from the Broncos, but the coaching staff knows he will bounce right back.
"Landon Bow is the CHL goalie of the week," Dixon noted. "We're not worried about him."
The Wheat Kings did most of their damage off the rush and that's something the Broncos believe they can learn from.
"You have to make sure you're positioned well between the dots," Dixon said. "You can't get too wide or too spread and that happened on the goals we gave up."
There is no time to dwell on the loss as they host Moose Jaw on Saturday night. It's Beat Breast Cancer Night at the Credit Union iPlex with several fund-raising efforts towards the cause.
Our broadcast starts at 6:30pm on The Eagle 94.1 FM.
