In an unexpected media event, The Swift Current Broncos announced that Head Coach and General Manager Dean Brockman would be leaving the organization effective Friday, October 15, 2021.

With the Broncos since the 2018-2019 season, Brockman was brought on board during what the team calls an "incredibly challenging time"; one which saw the cupboards effectively bare after chasing an Ed Chynoweth Cup through the trading of prospects for older players.

While that approach would prove successful, it meant that Brockman inherited a team in need of restocking, and one that both he and the executive knew would not be competitive for a hopefully brief number of seasons. But the plan was put in place and Brockman stuck to it.

While at times this did not sit well with Broncos fans, leading to some early concerns after Brockman was brought on board, Liam Choo-Foo, Governor of the Broncos Board spoke about the GMs ability to take it in stride.

"The easy thing to do would have been to trade some of those future assets away and get a couple of 19-year-olds that would have made us more competitive on the ice but would not have helped us in our long-term rebuild plan. So at personal cost and reputational cost, you stuck to the plan that you had presented to us, and I wanted to thank you for that and I want to acknowledge it here publically as well."

Brockman shrugged off the early tension, thanking the naysayers for keeping him motivated. For him, any fan is a good fan, and being passionate means that they care, which is something that in his experience isn't something that every sports team enjoys and he feels Swift Current is special in that regard.

"This is a great community. There are so many things that there is to offer. And one of the greatest things about this community is that they love their team."

Brockman feels that while the job of restocking the shelves is not entirely complete, he feels that they have the pieces in place to be on the track to long-term success. While he was cagey with specific plans following his tenure with the team, he feels as though it was the right time to leave, insisting that he was doing so on his terms.

"I feel that they can move forward without me. There isn't one particular reason. It's just I feel that it's important for me to get out of the way and let these good people work and you know what, I'll support them in any way that I can. There can be thousands of reasons, but it's about me. It's about me this time and not about anyone else."

In the interim, the Broncos announced that Chad Leslie would be taking on the role of Interim General Manager, while Devan Praught, who was brought into the organization over the summer, would become the interim bench boss while a search for a permanent replacement takes place.
