The Swift Current Broncos AGM earlier this week didn't focus solely on finances. A fair amount of time was devoted to discussing the on-ice product as well.

While it's no secret that the Broncos are in the midst of a rebuild, and are suffering in the win column as a result, Head Coach and General Manager Dean Brockman had a number of positives to take away from the most recent season.

"Obviously as a coach, you want to win every game. Was that realistic last year? No. But you're always expecting to do better and I think maybe we didn't win more games or anything of that nature, but I thought we were in more games, which is great."

Brockman and the Broncos have had an impressive pair of drafts in the last couple of years, rebuilding a stock of young talent that had been gutted in order to build the team that took the WHL championship in 2018.

Building that draft capital was one of the key focuses for Brockman, even though those changes would have consequences in the short term.

"You put the GM cap on, and I thought we got accomplished a lot more than what we set out to do. We were pretty happy with all the kids we got signed from our '05 draft class, which was really key for us."

The Broncos selected 11 players in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft and two players from the US Draft. They've also signed five of their players from the 2019 draft class and five from 2020; building up a stock of young talent that Brockman hopes will get the fans excited when play resumes.

"The last couple of years we haven't been the youngest team, right? So it'll be good to have a bunch of young guys that you can work with and develop and get into action."

He admits though that while there is a reason for optimism, it will take time, as younger players are not always going to be major contributors; stressing that while you can see flashes of goodness and even greatness, it's usually the 18 and 19-year-olds that are carrying the bulk of the performance.
