Logan Flodell made 39 saves as the Swift Current Broncos picked up a big two points on the road with a 4-3 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Aleksi Heponiemi scored the winner and had two assists, while Tyler Steenbergen scored twice to reach the 30-goal mark on the season. Both Glenn Gawdin and Colby Sissons had two assists in the win.

“I was impressed with our compete level,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “I thought we battled hard on pucks. It wasn't our cleanest game by any means, but after Tuesday's loss to Moose Jaw we really wanted to come out here with a good effort and I thought our effort twas really good. Our execution still needs some work, but we killed a lot of penalties and found at way at the end to hold on. It's a good team over there. They played quite well.”

Steenbergen opened the scoring midway through the first period when he hammered home a loose puck after a Sissons shot was blocked.

Medicine Hat pulled back even when Max Gerlach grabbed the rebound of a Gary Haden shot and wrapped it around into the empty Swift Current net.

The game's turning point came with thirty seconds to go in the first period as Tigers forward Tyler Preziuso missed a chance from the slot in the Swift Current zone and Steenbergen flew down the right wing the other way. His centering feed bounced right back to him and Steenbergen shot home his 30th goal of the season.

“Anytime you get a goal in the last minute it's a momentum building and a momentum killer for the other team,” Smith said. “To get two that was a nice bonus. We took advantage of what they gave us.”

Swift Current extended their lead only eight seconds later when Conner Chalk finished a nice passing play on a quick attack off the draw from Heponiemi and Gawdin.

Medicine Hat had plenty of chances to pull even in the second period outshooting the Broncos 15-4 with three opportunities on the man advantage. They only found the net once when Mark Rassell snapped home his 21st of the season and Swift Current continued to lead going into the third period.

The Broncos were perfect on the penalty kill after struggling in that department on Tuesday.

“Guys dug in a little bit,” Smith said. “I thought the PK guys were outstanding tonight and it starts with our goalie who was our best PK. Guys battled. Our PK was dynamite tonight it was one of the major factors of the two points.”

Heponiemi pulled the Broncos ahead 4-2 as Sissons hit him for a breakaway on the power play. The flashy Finn made a nice move to open up goaltender Michael Bullion's five-hole and slid in his 16th goal of the season.

Less than a minute later Haden got behind the Swift Current defence and beat Flodell for his 5th goal of the season to get the Tigers back to within a goal.

Medicine Hat pulled their goaltender later, but they weren't able to break through a strong defensive performance by the Broncos in the dying minutes and some big saves from Flodell.

The Broncos were only the third team to beat Medicine Hat at home this season.

Swift Current broke up their top line of Gawdin, Heponiemi and Steenbergen before the game. They did come back to it several times throughout the night, while also attempting to find some chemistry with different line mates.

“We need to find some other scoring,” Smith said. “I thought mixing them up at the start and throughout the game worked. At times we went back to them on power plays and icings and things like that. I thought the three of them when they were split up did a good job distributing the puck, creating and playing the right way. Our top guys were our top guys.”

Swift Current takes a 14-4-1-0 record into Saturday night's home game against the Calgary Hitmen. They will then head to Brandon for an afternoon game on Sunday. You can hear them both live on The Eagle 94.1 FM with Robertson Family Group Broncos Hockey at 6:30pm.
