Evan Weinger's hat trick lifted the Brandon Wheat Kigns to a come-from-behind 6-3 win over the Swift Current Broncos tonight.

The Broncos were up 2-0 and 3-2 in the game before losing control of it in the third period.

The result is a missed opportunity for the Broncos as Moose Jaw lost 6-4 to Prince Albert and a win would have vaulted Swift Current into first place in the WHL.

Brandon continued their strong recent play at home including victories over Moose Jaw and Lethbridge in the last week.

Swift Current pulled ahead early in the first period when Kaden Elder beat out an icing on a pass from Connor Hornung to scored his 15th of the season. The goal tied Elder's previous career high.

Beck Malenstyn then put the Broncos ahead 2-0 by stealing a puck in the netural zone and making a great move on a breakaway to score his 15th of the season shorthanded.

Swift Current then came out slow in the second period and the Wheat Kings eventually ereased that early lead. Cole Reinhardt converted a nice play off the rush created by speed from Luka Burzan and Stelio Mattheos to close the gap to 2-1. Just over a minute later Weinger cut out from behind the net to score the first of his three goals on the night.

Tyler Steenbergen then struck on the power play to push the Broncos back out front. His 46th goal of the season was also his 100th point as he reached that mark for the first time in his WHL career.

With Steenbergen, Glenn Gawdin and Aleksi Heponiemi all over that milestone the Broncos are the first team since the 2012-2013 Portland Winterhawks to have three players with 100 points or more. It's the first time the Broncos have had three 100 point players since their WHL championship season of 1992-93.

Weinger responded with a minute to go in the second period ripping the puck by Stuart Skinner off the rush for his 28th of the season.

Wheat Kings starter Logan Thompson left the game injured after the second period, but the Broncos didn't test backup Dylan Myskiw much in the third period. They only managed five shots on net as the Wheat Kings took over the game.

Midway through the third it looked like the Broncos were going to pull ahead again when Elder deflected a Josh Anderson shot through Myskiw, but Malenstyn was called for an interference call right as Anderson touched the puck to negate the goal.

Tye Lewis would score his 42nd of the season on the ensuing power play to put Brandon out front for the first time. Linden McCorrister then extended the lead on a breakaway only 26 seconds later and Weinger finished his hat trick into an empty net.

Brandon moved to 25-6-3-1 at home this season and moved within two points of securing a playoff spot.

Swift Current was missing captain Glenn Gawdin and defenceman Jacson Alexander. Broncos Coach/Director of Player Personnel Manny Viveiros said before the game that Gawdin was out with the flu.

The loss leaves the Broncos a point back of Warriors for first place with four games left in the regular season including tomorrow night's visit to Moose Jaw. You can listen live on The Eagle 94.1 FM with Robertson Family Group Broncos Hockey at 6:30pm.
