The Swift Current Broncos have quickly filled their vacant import slot with 6'7 Swedish forward Gustav Olhaver.

Swift Current traded 19-year-old Swede Andreas Schumacher to Seattle yesterday for no announced return. However, the deal forced Seattle to release Olhaver in order to open up a roster spot for Schumacher.

The Broncos were then able to claim the 18-year-old Olhaver today.

First year import players can't be included in trades although this claim essentially results in Seattle and Swift Current swapping players.

Olhaver is listed at 6'7 and 220lbs from Angelholm, Sweden. He had 2 goals, 3 assists and was a -9 in 31 games for Seattle this season.

"He's more of a power forward than Schumacher was," said Bronocs Coach/GM Mark Lamb. "It's a situation where we get a year younger. He's a drafted prospect and both guys needed a new chance."

Colorado picked Olhaver in the 7th round of the 2015 NHL draft. He's been described as a good skater especially for his size and calls himself a power forward.

"For his size he's a very good skater and puck handler," Lamb said. "We see the upside there. He's an NHL draft pick so the scouts see something in him also."

The Broncos now have the rest of the season to evaluate Olhaver. If they keep both him and 17-year-old Artyum Minulin the Broncos wouldn't have space to add a player in next summer's import draft.

"It gives us a real good look at him and a real good audition," Lamb said. "We'll put him in the right position and hopefully he can have a lot of success at it. If he plays really good and is a big part of our team down the stretch it will turn into another year."

"He's a very motivated guy and wants to play in the league."

Olhaver played on several teams in 2014-15 as he spent the majority of the season with the Rogle Under 20 team in Sweden's top junior league where he had 12 points in 41 games. While they were on break he also played for two Under 18 teams where he had a combined 25 points in 18 games.

Olhaver also represented Sweden on their Under 18 team.

He attended Broncos practice today and will be available to the team tomorrow when they host Prince Albert.
