Colby Sissons' first career goal early in the third period stood up as the winner as the Swift Current Broncos beat Saskatoon 6-4 tonight.
The Broncos erased 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3 deficits in earning their second win in as many nights.
"We had a little bit of a slow start," said Broncos assistant coach Jamie Heward. "For us the effort is there and we want to maintain that effort. We knew we played a good game last night and we wanted to come out and play well again tonight. The guys responded after that first period."
Swift Current fell behind early and were outshot 13-5 as Saskatoon took a 3-2 lead in the first period.
"We weren't tidy," Heward said. "Everything they created was because of us. We would turn pucks over or make a wrong read. We weren't as hard as we needed to be coming into their rink... for us it was a simple message we need to work way harder and we needed to clean up what was happening from the red line in."
A Broncos team that has been struggling to score lately put up a big number thanks to contributions all throughout their lineup. Kade Jensen scored twice, while Scott Feser, Tyler Steenbergen, Lane Pederson and Sissons added singles.
"We're getting secondary scoring," Heward noted. "We had two goals off the rush where guys jumped into the play. We just did some different things. We were making good reads and scored some goals. Then we just continued to work hard. We got some goals on the doorstep. Good things are starting to happen."
"We've made some adjustments. A couple of guys have changed some equipment, changed some sticks and they're getting rewarded."
Glenn Gawdin got tangled up with Blades defenceman Bryton Sayers and left the game with an apparently lower body injury early in the second period. He already had two assists before he was forced out of the game. If he's out for an extended period again he will be difficult for the Broncos to replace.
"It will because he's a more complete player than just an offensive guy," Heward said. "He's the type of player you're really going to miss because he's not just about scoring. He wins face-offs and he's really reliable in certain situations so it's a big loss, but you trade for a guy like Pederson who can step up and play that role."
With Gawdin hurt Pederson stepped up to the top line and had an assist on the winner and an empty-net goal to secure the victory.
Steenbergen also had a goal and an assist.
Landon Bow made 24 saves to earn the win for the Broncos, while Brock Hamm stopped 26 shots for the Blades. Swift Current went 0 for 3 on the power play and Saskatoon finished 2 for 5.
Swift Current moved to within six points of the Edmonton Oil Kings for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They visit Regina on Friday.
