The newest Swift Current Bronco is set for the second game of his WHL career tonight in B.C.

17-year-old defenceman Austin Herron, who the Broncos picked up on Monday, made his debut Wednesday night in a 5-2 loss to the Victoria Royals.

"I was real excited to be with a team that wanted me again - looking forward to all the opportunities they're going to give me," he said.

A product of Abbotsford, B.C., Herron is a former third-round bantam draft pick (65th overall in 2016) of the Moose Jaw Warriors. However, he couldn't land a roster spot on what was a position of depth in the 2017-18 season for the Warriors.

Now, the 6-foot-3, 174-pounder is looking to use tricks of the trade he learned in training camp from those other defencemen moving forward on his new team.

"I just learned a lot from all their veteran d-men," Herron explained. "All their guys that are going to move on soon like Josh Brook, I learned a lot from him and (Brandon) Schuldhaus, I learned a lot from him as well. Hopefully how I watched them play is going to come to my game."

Soon-to-be two games removed from allowing 71 shots on net against the Vancouver Giants, the Broncos certainly look forward to seeing Herron's self-proclaimed defensive game grow.

"I like the more defensive side, I shut guys down and just get pucks out. I can shoot the puck pretty good. "Just a good stick all around. Able to keep up with the play and skating, keep gap and communicate the whole time with your other d-man and forwards. Make sure you pick guys up at the right times. Know when to jump, or when to pass the puck to who and where."

Herron and the Broncos take on the Kamloops Blazers tonight, with Robertson Family Group Broncos Hockey pregame action starting at 7:30 p.m. on The Eagle 94.1.
