In a game again dominated by Swift Current's top line it was rookie Logan Foster whose first career WHL goal stood up as the winner in a 6-4 victory in Saskatoon.

“It just popped right in front and I put it in,” Foster said. “It wasn't much but it felt good.”

Foster came out of the penalty box midway through the second period and sent a puck up to captain Glenn Gawdin that turned into a 3 on 1 rush. The 18-year-old then went hard to the net and was the recipient of an Aleksi Heponiemi pass right on the doorstep that he put home for what was at that point a 5-2 Swift Current lead.

It was his first goal in 12 WHL games with both Spokane and Swift Current.

“I was kind of gripping my stick too tight,” Foster said. “Just putting the puck in the net feels good.”

While the goal came with members of Swift Current's top line on the ice with him, Foster's goal is part of a needed push for secondary scoring.

“We're always hoping... it's the elephant in the room we want secondary scoring from guys and tonight we got it,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “Foster got in the lineup he hadn't played in a few games, he provides some energy comes out of the penalty box, jumps into a 3 on 1 and puts it into the back of the net. Maybe that sparks something for him and others.”

It was a shaky start as Chase Wouters jumped the Blades out to a quick lead only 24 seconds into the game.

Swift Current bounced back shortly after as Aleksi Heponiemi picked Gage Ramsay's pocket behind the net and set Tyler Steenbergen up for his 24th goal of the season.

“Fall behind or go up early just stick with the plan,” Smith said. “I thought we did that for the majority of the game. The power play was good. I thought we gave them a little life at the end, they took some life and starting coming to make it close, but at the end of the day two points on the road is important.”

Less than a minute later the Broncos struck again on the power play as Colby Sissons took advantage of an Artyom Minulin screen to wrist in his 5th goal of the season. Glenn Gawdin extended that lead jumping on a Blades turnover and firing a puck off the crossbar before knocking his own rebound in for his 12th.

“We got after it,” Smith said. “We put pucks behind them. We attacked their D, forced them to make some hard plays, intercepted the pucks and shot some pucks with some traffic. Two of the first (period) goals were a shot with a guy in front of him and he couldn't see. That's big getting a body in front of a goalie. That turned it around. We just kept coming at them.”

Late in the period Blades defenceman Seth Bafaro knocked Minulin out of the game with a check from behind headfirst into the boards. Minulin came up cut and was helped back to the dressing room, while Kole Gable engaged Bafaro in a fight before the Saskatoon defender was issued a game misconduct.

The teams traded goals before the end of a wild first period as Braylon Shmyr struck on a rebound 4 on 4 and Heponiemi used a Max Patterson screen to score his 13th goal of the season on another power play.

The second period wasn't nearly as wild with few chances on either sides. Broncos rookie Logan Foster had a memorable moment scoring his first WHL goal fresh out of the penalty box on a set up by Gawdin and Heponiemi.

Saskatoon didn't go away as they started throwing pucks at Logan Flodell in the third period and found the net with a late push. The Blades thought they had scored on a Mark Rubinchik shot midway through the third, but the referees waived it off due to incidental contact on Flodell.

Saskatoon quickly cut the lead to 5-3 on a Libor Hajek one-timer and then struck again on Michael Farren's power play goal.

“On the third goal we got caught out icing it three times in a row,” Smith said. “Then they got a power play goal. They got the momentum and we did a good job fending it off at the end. They kind of stayed with a plan too they didn't get chaotic trying to make up for all the goals at once. They played a pretty solid game as well”

The Blades got a late power play and with the Saskatoon net empty the Broncos were able to fend them off. Steenbergen grabbed a rebound in the final seconds and fired it down the ice before Conner Chaulk came out of the penalty box and salted it away with an empty-netter.

Swift Current has won all three games in Saskatoon so far this season and are 7-1-1-0 on the road. Their 14-3-1-0 record overall leaves them with the best winning percentage in the WHL.

Steenbergen and Heponiemi each had a goal and two assists. Flodell made 29 saves in the win.
