The Swift Current Broncos have a busy weekend ahead of them with the challenges of a WHL schedule apparent this early in the season.

They're in Prince Albert tonight before hosting Medicine Hat on Saturday and heading to Brandon for an afternoon game on Sunday.

Swift Current will be looking to build on the success they had last Sunday in a 6-0 win in Saskatoon that was a more accurate reflection of the type of game they want to play.

"I thought the guys in front of me played very well," said goaltender Travis Child. "The defencemen were steady and made good passes, the forwards were able to get on the forecheck and force them to make turnovers. It was really good to see. I felt like I was seeing the puck well and the guys in front of me were giving me a chance to see the puck every time."

From an offensive standpoint the top line really clicked for Swift Current on Sunday with Tyler Steenbergen, Aleksi Heponiemi and Calvin Spencer combining for 10 points. Steenbergen and Heponiemi have been paired together for much of the pre-season and the start of the regular season so far.

"He's an unbelievable playmaker and player," Steenbergen said. "You've got to expect it at any time. There might be two guys on you and he'll still put it on your tape. It's nice building that chemistry early and hopefully it stays this week and keeps on clicking."

Steenbergen is off to a great start this season with 3 goals and 2 assists in the first two games. He was one of the hotter scorers in the WHL with 18 goals after Christmas last season.

"Built up confidence at the end of last season," Steenbergen said. "I don't feel as uptight this year. Hopefully I can continue the trend from the end of last season."

Their lineup should get even more of a boost this weekend with the return of cornerstones Glenn Gawdin, Lane Pederson and Max Lajoie from NHL camps. The Broncos are still waiting to get Colby Sissons back from New Jersey.

Swift Current took more penalties than they would like over their first two games but their penalty kill stepped up. They held Saskatoon to 1 for 12 on the man advantage including stopping all five Blades power plays on Sunday.

"I thought we did a really good job of killing penalties," Child said. "It was a huge momentum swing for us to kill off those penalties."

Child won the WHL Goaltender of the Week Award for the first weekend of the season. He noted it was an honour and is trying to keep an even approach to his third WHL season.

"Just live in the moment and have fun with it," Child said. "It goes by so fast and it's going to be a fun year."

There's a strong competition between Swift Current's two veteran goalies Child and Taz Burman. It's something Child relishes.

"It's kind of a healthy competition to be pushed by another guy who is just as good and can play as good as you," Child said. "It's really good to push me in games, push me in practice, push me for starts and push for every minute here."

Tonight's game is the first meeting of the regular season between the Broncos and Raiders after they had a very entertaining season series in 2015-16. It should be a good rivalry weekend with the always entertaining battle between the Broncos and the Medicine Hat Tigers slated for Saturday at the Credit Union iPlex.
