Coda Gordon had two assists in the Swift Current victory

After being shut out by Saskatoon on Friday, the Swift Current Broncos found the back of the net in a 5-3 pre-season victory over Regina.

Rookie Coda Gordon played on a line with Taylor Vause and Brad Hoban that combined for 8 points.

Gordon says it helped to play with a couple of veterans.

"They always seem to find the open spot," Gordon said.

"(Vause and Hoban) make it easy for you."

Assistant Coach Darren Evjen liked what he saw from Gordon.

"Coda Gordon is one of the headiest guys we've seen," Evjen said.

"The play never dies with him."

The Broncos found themselves down 1-0 early when a dump in took a bad hop to elude rookie goaltender Steven Myland. Top prospect Morgan Klimchuk made no mistake with an open net to give Regina a lead.

"I fought through some adversity and that was good," Myland said.

Trevor Cameron struck back with his second of the pre-season on the power play after some nice work with Graham Black down low. Cameron ripped his shot from the top of the left circle over the blocker of young netminder Teagan Sacher.

Swift Current then took the lead when Vause caught the Regina defencemen going the wrong way to spring Hoban. Things appeared to be headed their way before a turnover on the power play lead to a shorthanded goal for Pats forward Andrew Rieder. The Regina native gave Swift Current trouble all game.

The Broncos got out of the first period with a lead after a pretty passing play by Gordon, Vause and Hoban turned into Vause's second of the pre-season.

Swift Current lost the momentum early in the second period after a string of unsuccessful power play attempts that included an extended 5 on 3. They had nine shots to start the period before Regina even had one, but the Pats got the only goal of the second frame when Jack Rodewald knocked home his fourth.

Another nice passing play 10:05 into the third period ended in Hoban's game winner. He fired the puck over Sacher's glove on the short side for a 4-3 lead. Denis Bosc then put the game away by tapping in a pretty cross-crease feed by Cameron for his first WHL exhibition goal.

Swift Current out shot Regina 29-28 to move their pre-season record to 2-2-1-0 . It was the frist win for Myland in three starts. Austin Smith is 1-1 so far.

The Broncos are off until Friday's game in Prince Albert. They will wrap up their exhibition schedule against the Raiders in Shaunavon on Saturday. We will have live play-by-play of Saturday's game on The Eagle 94.1 FM.
