Jon Martin really is the new sheriff in town.

After only a few weeks in Swift Current, Broncos players voted to name Martin the WHL team's new captain.

"He's a veteran and he's very experienced," Lamb said. "It's not because he's on this point streak and great run of play. It's one of the reasons, but how professional he is in the dressing room, how he prepares, how he is treating the players, how he is with the coaching staff... the players had seen those things too and named him captain."

Acquired from Kootenay for a 4th round bantam draft pick, Martin has 19 points in 9 games with Swift Current. The overage forward has won the WHL Player of the Week award and has been named first star three times since joining the Broncos.

"We're a young team and they need people to look up to," Lamb said. "He's respectful of everyone. He's a real hard player who is putting up points right now. He's got the respect of the coaching staff and obviously he has the respect of the players in the room."

When he first arrived in Swift Current, Martin spoke about his leadership abilities.

"I was on a playoff team for four straight years," Martin said at the time. "Just take what I learned there and bring it here."

"I think once I get comfortable in the room I'll be more vocal."

It's clear he has been able to make an impact with the teammates who elected him their on-ice and dressing room leader."

"When we do the vote and you see the majority of people are voting for him," Lamb said. "I like that because it makes the team on the same page as the coaching staff."

"He's always had a lot of respect. When you play a guy like Jon Martin you always know he's on the ice... since he's come here he has hit a different level."

Martin takes over as captain after Colby Cave held the honour for two seasons. The rookie professional in the Boston Bruins organization tweeted his support to Martin after the announcement.

"Congrats (Jon Martin) on becoming captain of the Broncos," Cave said. "Very well deserved and excited to see how the year goes."

Jake DeBrusk, Glenn Gawdin and Scott Feser will serve as alternate captains.

Martin is second in the WHL in goals with 13 and third in points with 23. He'll lead Swift Current against Saskatoon on Friday night at home. The Broncos then head out on the road to Prince Albert on Saturday.

Both games will be live on The Eagle 94.1 FM.
