Two more auditions for some potential future Swift Current Broncos this weekend.

The Broncos play a home-and-home with the Lethbridge Hurricanes to wrap up their pre-season schedule. They're in Lethbridge tonight and host the Hurricanes Sunday evening at Fariview West Arena.

It should be a younger line-up with eight different Broncos either off to NHL camps or leaving shortly.

“I think it's ideal,” said Broncos Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Manny Viveiros. “Our veteran players that are not in the lineup we know what they can do. It's an opportunity these two games for some of these other players who are trying to make our hockey team to place themselves in game situations. We're evaluating these kids not only in games but in practice. Their habits in pracitising, what they do off ice (and) it's pretty well around the clock evaluation of these kids.”

The Broncos are very pleased to see so many of their players attending NHL camps. They view it as a good opportunity for the players and a nice representation of the team.

“We're very happy for the kids,” Viveiros said. “Anytime you get as many kids like that going to NHL camps... is representing the organization very well. We'll be curious about who comes back. We know some guys will be coming back for sure, but some others are question marks.”

The biggest questions remain Lane Pederson, Max Lajoie and Glenn Gawdin who are all eligible to play in the AHL this season. Any of the other five Broncos at NHL camps would have to make the NHL roster to turn pro.

For those that will return with that experience it is something Viveiros views as a significant learning tool.

“Anytime they get an opportunity to practice or even play exhibition games at the NHL level it will make a big difference. It's a different speed and the players they are playing are bigger, stronger and faster. It's a measuring stick for these kids to see what it is going to take to get to the next leve.”

One of the battles that will likely continue into the regular season is for the back-up goaltending spot. 18-year-old Bailey Brkin and 17-year-old Joel Hofer are making their case to play behind veteran Taz Burman.

“That's something that is going to take time to sort itself out,” Viveiros said. “Taz Burman is going to be our guy this year. We have two really young kids that we're very happy with here that are pushing for the back-up position right now. It's something we have to be careful with we have to make sure we have two goalies that can play throughout the season. We're going to be patient and make sure we make the best evaluation in chosing one of the two kids.”

Sunday's game at Fairview West Arena in Swift Current will be a no charge. The Broncos won't play their regular season home opener until October when the Credit Union iPlex is ready after renovations.

You can hear both games this weekend on The Eagle 94.1 FM with Robertson Family Group Broncos Hockey at 6:30pm.
