A pair of Swift Current Broncos rookie forwards look to continue building their young WHL resumes after each collecting a 'first' in their respective WHL careers earlier this month.

The accomplishments both came on the Broncos' four-game Alberta road trip, and current five-game winning streak.

Quinton Waitzner recorded his first WHL goal, and point, in the Broncos' 6-1 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings on December 10.

"Just the time of my life - no better way to score it," Waitzner said.

The Victoria, B.C. product is now in his first full season in the WHL after a five-game stint last year with the Broncos. The physical 6-foot-4, 203-pound forward has played in 25 of 34 games this season.

"It's been great this season so far - I've been putting up good minutes and playing lots of games," Waitzner said while adding he's identified some areas of his game that he wants to improve upon moving forward.

"Just the details, small things out there - getting the puck out of the zone, getting it in on net, and just a little bit of skill."

Along with those five WHL games last season, Waitzner, who was 16 at the time, logged 39 games of Junior 'B' with the Saanich Braves in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League.

Logging nine points (2 G, 7 A) over that stretch, Waitzner says the size and physicality of the league, instead of the possibility of Midget AAA, that helped him acclimate to the WHL.

"Last year it was really good playing against bigger, tougher guys," he said. "Now that I'm up here playing with even bigger and tougher guys, it's definitely really helped playing at a higher level last year."

The other rookie Bronco to nab his own 'first' was Ben King, who played in his first WHL game the previous night - a December 9 contest that saw the Broncos defeat the Red Deer Rebels 3-2 in overtime.

"It's a great feeling. You get a lot of nerves in you, and to get that first shift out of the way was really good - I enjoyed it."

The native of Vernon, B.C. didn't have to wait long to make his debut after being selected 13th overall in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft by the Broncos in early May.

King has spent the first few months of the 2017-18 hockey season in his home province, logging 15 games with the Okanagan Rockets of the B.C. Major Midget League, where he recorded 18 points (7 G, 11 A). The 6-foot 159-pound forward also suited up for the hometown Vernon Vipers for two games of Junior 'A' in the BCHL.

However, the ability to compare his game first-hand to that of an every-day WHLer has allowed the 15-year-old to better see what improvements he wants to make in his own game.

"I think just the speed - I need to take into hand and work on my speed, he said. "The physicality and the strength of all the players - you've just got to work on it yourself and get ready for next season."

After suiting up for this past Saturday's home win over the Kamloops Blazers, King has now appeared in four games.

King, Waitzner, and the rest of the Broncos are currently off for Christmas break but jump back into the WHL schedule December 27 as they host the Moose Jaw Warriors in the first game of a home-and-home with their Trans-Canada rivals.
