It was a strong rebound for Merkley after an off game in a 3-1 loss to Calgary on Friday.

"He wasn't happy with his game (Friday) and he comes into this game and he scores," said Broncos Associate Coach Darren Evjen. "I think the biggest part of his game was that last 29 seconds. What a heady play to push the puck over the blue line off the face-off... make a couple of plays to get it outside and just kill the clock."

Colby Cave had a goal and an assist, while Graham Black helped out with a couple of assists.

Julius Honka also scored for the Broncos.

"I thought we came out and really set the tone," Evjen said. "Had good compete, moved the puck very well, defended well, didn't turn the puck over, cycled, got pucks to the net and did a lot of good things."

Connor Bleackley and Rhyse Dieno each had a goal and an assist for the Rebels. Wyatt Johnson had the other Red Deer goal.

Landon Bow made 20 saves to earn the win, while Patrik Bartosak stopped 42 in a losing cause.

It was also a physical game with four fights in the second period.
