The Swift Current Broncos (9-12-2-1) clawed back from down 4-3 late in regulation Saturday night, downing the Regina Pats (9-13-0-1) by a 5-4 score.

Swift Current got on the board early as a dump in from Rayan Bettahar came off the end boards and right in front of the net. Brady Birnie picked up the puck cut to the net, sliding it through the five hole of Drew Sim for his fourth goal of the year just 2:11 into the game.

After killing off a pair of power plays the Broncos added to their lead. Kayden Sadhra-Kang worked the puck around the boards to Owen Pickering in the left-wing corner, and Pickering fired the puck on net.

Mathew Ward deflected the shot under the blocker of Sim for his 10th of the season, pushing the Broncos lead to 2-0 with 5:49 remaining.

Connor Bedard then had a pair of similar setups as the Pats scored twice in 2:04 to tie the game. Both goals saw Bedard skate through centre and gain the Broncos line before sliding the puck over to the left wing for one timers. The shots read 11-10 Swift Current after 20 minutes.

Caleb Wyrostok restored the Broncos lead with a power-play goal early in the second period. Bettahar’s shot from the mid-point was tipped by Josh Davies and came to the side of the crease for Wyrostok to tap it in.

Bedard showed off his high-end skill halfway through the second period as the Broncos were hemmed in their own zone for a long time against the Pats top line.

The Broncos got the puck to centre, but Bedard quickly gained the Bronco line before stepping around two poke checks and firing home his 12th of the season from the slot to tie the game at three.

Regina got a power play late in the period but the Broncos had a pair of great looks shorthanded. Wyrostok poked the puck free at his own blue line and came in on a partial break, but was held up by Ryker Evans and fell into the net. There was no call on the play.

The teams went into the second intermission tied at three with the shots reading 21-20 Swift Current.

Jakob Brook gave Regina their first lead of the game 8:39 into the third period, beating Poulter on the blocker side off the rush.

The Broncos thought they had tied the game just as they went to the penalty kill as Nagy set up Carter Stebbings for a short breakaway. Stebbings was hooked up as he went to shoot and fell into Sim at the same time Nagy poked the puck into the net.

The net was knocked off the pegs and the play was reviewed, eventually ruling that the net was off the pegs before the puck crossed the line as the Pats still held their 4-3 lead.

The Broncos would then actually tie the game while the two teams played 4-on-4. Connor Hvidston worked himself free behind the Pats net and set up Wyrostok for his second of the game, pulling the Broncos even 4-4 with 5:27 to play.

The Pats then took back-to-back penalties giving the Broncos an excellent opportunity to regain the lead. Ward made the Pats pay with a one timer from the right circle that sailed over the glove of Sim, putting the Broncos ahead 5-4 with 3:07 to play.

Poulter nearly scored into the empty Regina net, firing the puck from behind his own goal the length of the ice, but missed by mere inches.

Nagy tied up the puck off the ensuing faceoff to seal the victory for the Broncos.

Swift Current is next in action on Tuesday as they travel north to Prince Albert to meet the Raiders (9-12-0-1) before returning home for their annual Teddy Bear Toss on Friday against Moose Jaw.
