An incident this past Friday has hospitalized three current and former Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The incident involved the starting of a campfire at the home of fomer Hurricane Tyler Wong. It put current captain Jordy Bellerive, alternate captain Ryan Vandervlis, and former Hurricane Matt Alfaro in the hospital.

The trio sustained various injuries, although both Bellerive are in stable condition. However, Vandervlis is in critical condition, and has been place in a medically-induced coma. All three were admitted into a Calgary hospital.

The news comes via a statement released by the WHL in conjunction with the families of Wong and Vandervlis, clearing up earlier reports from media sources which were deemed false.

The statement refutes an initial report which stated that the incident occurred as part of a bachelor party.

“On Friday evening, nine of Tyler’s friends came to our house to stay the night as they were planning to go golfing and camping on Saturday,” said the family of Tyler Wong in the statement. “It was not a stag or bachelor party, as has been inaccurately reported.”

“In starting a campfire, the accident occurred,” they added. “Mr. and Mrs. Wong were present and acted quickly to transport those injured to a Calgary hospital.”

“Our son and brother was injured at a campfire this past weekend. We want to be clear that alcohol was not a factor in this accident,” said the family of Vandervlis in the statement.

“Ryan is in a medically-induced coma as he suffered severe burns to his body. He is receiving exceptional medical care in an intensive-care unit in Calgary where he remains in critical condition.”

As has been shown in recent and tragic events, the hockey community has shown its tight-knit nature with the amount of support towards the trio of players and their families.

“We are earnestly praying for three of Tyler’s closest friends – Ryan, Jordy and Matt – along with their families, for comfort and healing during this time of hurt,” said the Wong family.

“We are grateful and overwhelmed by the amount of love and support we have received and pray that Ryan will make a full recovery,” added the Vandervlis’ via the statement on WHL.ca

New information will be given once the families are notified, and updates have been provided.

“The entire WHL family is deeply concerned for the well-being of the three players involved in the accident that occurred Friday evening,” said WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “The WHL has been in contact with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and will continue to support the Club and the families concerned during the recovery process.”
