Canada’s Chelsea Carey dropped her first game of the 2016 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship this morning at the Credit Union iPlex.

Taking on Russia’s Anna Sidorova, Carey and her Calgary rink fell 6-3.

“Just really frustrating, we had chances and couldn’t take advantage of them. I missed a bad shot in seven and then we just got behind the 8-ball in eight, they had us in all kinds of trouble and I wasn’t able to make he draw to save it. Then I had a chance in nine but we were just kind of fighting it a bit,” Carey spoke of the game.

After jamming an open take-out with her last rock in the first end, Sidorova was able to pursue a deuce instead of a blank to take an early 2-0 lead.

Canada blanked the second end and used a perfect hit and roll from Amy Nixon in the third to score a three-ender and take the lead.

The Russians then blanked the next three ends before manufacturing their pair in seven for a 4-3 lead.

Russia then stole their way to victory in the following three ends, picking up the 6-3 victory.

“I said a couple of times we kind of get used to playing with nobody cheering for us just because curling is not that big of a sport in Russia but we are happy to win against Canada because you guys have the greatest teams in the world and it is a big win for us, but for now it means nothing as we have lots of games to play,” Sidorova said after the game.

Russia will now return to the ice this afternoon to face another championship contender in the form of Sweden.

Canada will have the afternoon off before also battling Sweden tonight.

Other winners this morning included the USA, Switzerland and Denmark.
