Team Canada continued to maintain the pace atop the leaderboard this morning at the 2016 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship from the Credit Union iPlex.

Chelsea Carey and her team scored their second straight victory downing Daniela Driendl and Team Germany 7-5.

With the victory, the Canadians improved to 5-1 keeping them in a first place tie with Scotland, while Japan and Russia, who were idle this morning sit at 4-1.

“We had some struggles, but the ice is nice in the morning. We just have to trust it because it’s quite different (than the evening draws); it’s a lot faster,” said Carey.

“It’s nice, but it takes a while to get used to it. We missed a few opportunities in the fourth end to potentially set up a deuce, and then I missed a shot in five to give them three. So a little bit of struggles early but late in the game we settled in, we got on board with the speed differences and it was really good from there. I thought we played a good back half of the game.”

With Canada holding an early 2-1 lead after four ends of play momentum appeared to shift as the Canadians surrendered a three point end to the Germans, putting Carey and company behind 4-2.

Canada was able to bounce back in the fifth to score their deuce and tie the game heading into the break.

Carey and her Calgary rink then took control of the game with steals in the seventh and eighth ends.

Now midway through the week, Carey compared where the tam is now compared to how they felt midway through the Scotties in Grand Prairie.

“I’d say we’re similar,” said Carey. “We were still undefeated in Grande Prairie, which was nice. But I’d say the level of play is similar. We struggled to figure out the ice here more than we did in Grande Prairie, so it was a slower start here, because we were onto the ice right away during the Scotties. But I feel like we’re getting better in every game, and that’s all you can ask for.”

Canada is back on the ice this afternoon to battle Team Italy.
