Colby Cave is the 27th Captain in Swift Current Broncos franchise history.

The North Battleford, SK native earned the 'C' after a vote by his teammates this week, while Dillon Heatherington, Coda Gordon and Graham Black are his alternates.

"He's everything that we want in a Captain," said Broncos Coach/GM Mark Lamb. "First of all he's a real good player."

Broncos Coach/GM Mark Lamb Interview"Through training camp how he treats the younger guys, how he's bought the identity of what we are from the coaching staff, how he treats people, the respect he's had, his work ethic... he's our guy right now."

Cave scored 21 goals and had 20 assists last season as a sophomore. The 18-year-old broke out in the second half of the season at a nearly point-per-game pace and has 4 points in 2 games so far this season.

“It’s a true honour to be named captain of such a respectable organization,” says Cave.  “This organization goes back a long way. Just seeing some of the former captains and their names up on the wall, guys like Adam Lowry and Zack Smith, it’s quite an honour to be put into the same group as them. I hope to prove everyone right and keep this team on the right track and win some games.”

The vote was the closest Lamb has seen in his time behind the bench in Swfit Current.

"We've got a lot of guys that are getting a lot of respect," he said. "We've got ten guys on our team that could be captain and Cave came out on top."

Lamb is pleased with the whole leadership team and wasn't surprised to see any of the names that came up.

"I'm very comfortable with all of those guys and I have been in the last couple of years," he added. "That's what you're looking for in your leaders. They've got to think like you. They've got to breathe like you."

Cave came to Swift Current as a part of the blockbuster 8 for 1 trade that saw the Broncos ship former Captain Cody Eakin to the Kootenay Ice in January 2011. He was a first round pick by the Ice in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft.

Cave went unpicked in the 2013 NHL draft but played for the San Jose Sharks in the annual NHL Young Stars tournament as a free agent invite.

Heatherington was Swift Current's first round pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft and was a second round selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the most recent NHL draft. Gordon made the Broncos as a listed player and was a 6th round pick of the Calgary Flames in the 2012 NHL Draft. The Broncos acquired Black from the Edmonton Oil Kings in 2011 and he went on to get drafted by New Jersey in the 5th round of the 2012 NHL draft

The Broncos will play their first game with that new leadership core on Friday night at home against the Moose Jaw Warriors. They're in Medicine Hat on Saturday.

You can hear both games on The Eagle 94.1 FM.
