Chambers tankard

Swift Current's Jeff Chambers and Shaun Meachem will be going to the SaskTel Tankard in February, after qualifying out of the Northern Playdowns with Drew Heidt's rink out of Unity.

Chambers is Heidt's lead on the team, which won the B-event qualifier over Jeff Hartung.

"It was kind of an emotional rollercoaster," Chambers said. "We kind of had the highs and lows of any team that would go to play, but it's such a new team that I'm playing with, and we're still trying to figure out everything with each other."

"The first few games were actually pretty rough," he added. "We won our first one just barely, and the second one was a real heartbreaker. We lost to the A-side qualifiers, Terry Marteniuk's team, and we had the hammer on the extra end and missed an open shot on our last one. But the team had our little talk and battled back and got better as we went. By far, the final game against Jeff Hartung, which was one of the favourites, we came through and it was one of the best games of curling that I've ever been part of."

Chambers and Meachem are curling in their first season with Heidt, and they've had some success on the tour this year, and Jeff says although it is a new experience, getting to curl with Shaun has been great.

"I consider him one of the best curlers in the province, and that's a big reason why I've invested so much travelling time," he added. "It's well over three hours every time we go to an event now, so it's an investment that way, but there's no guy that I'd rather curl with."

Chambers adds they're hoping their success this season will take them to a berth at the Tim Hortons Brier in Calgary this March.

"We expect to really put a performance on and give ourselves a chance to get into the qualifiers, and then from there, it depends on whether we get on all cylinders and work well together, we can actually make the whole show."

The Tankard starts February 4th in Melville.

Meanwhile, Shaunavon's Wendy Thienes will be starting play at the Viterra Scotties in Assiniboia starting Wednesday afternoon.
