Football playoffs have started for our Chinook teams. The following is a game report submitted by Gull Lake Lions’ coach Neal Boutin:

The Gull Lake Lions headed up to Outlook on a cool Friday afternoon (Oct. 22) to tangle with the LCBI Bisons in the 6-Man Conference 3 playoffs. After the introduction of the players and the singing of Oh Canada, it was game on. The Bisons responded with a quick touchdown to take the lead.  The rest of the first quarter was a back and forth affair, as the Lions scored on a beautiful pass and run play to Brad Barsness. With  the score 14 to 8 for LCBI, the Lions Jared Down scampered up the  sideline for 60 yards before being taken down on the Bisons 6 yard  line. Three plays later Evan Girodat was stopped mere inches from the goal-line. That seemed to spark LCBI, as they moved the ball swiftly
down the field again. They would hit paydirt once more before the half to make the score 28-8 at halftime.

The Lions came out charging in the second half, as Barsness scored his second TD of the game on a nice catch at the goal-line. A fumble and an interception hurt the Lions, as the Bisons scored twice in succession, making the score 42-14. In a wild few minutes of football, the teams would trade kick-return touchdowns to make the score 50-22.  Dayton Potter ran down the sideline—thanks to a great block by first year player Shane Mackay—to give the Lions their first kick-return TD of the season.

In the forth quarter the Lions once again moved the ball effectively down the field. The drive was capped by a 12 yard TD run by quarterback Dustin Cooke. Brad Barsness complimented his strong play on offense by kicking three out of four converts. LCBI finished up the scoring to make the final 56-30.

The Bisons now represent Conference 3 as the second seed next week when they head to Plenty to play the Wildcats. Central Butte ended up as the first seed in the league. They will host the Kerrobert Rebels.

Thanks to Neal for the information and congratulations to Gull Lake on a strong showing in their first year of 6 man football!

In 9 man action, the SWAC league championship occurred in Assiniboia on Saturday, Oct. 23 when Maple Creek Redmen travelled to play the Rebels. Carlton came out victorious with a 2-1 win in a closely matched contest. The match was tied 1-1 until the dying minutes of the game when Carlton scored. The Colts goal was scored by #12 Cabrales. The final saw Carlton take on Moose Jaw Central with Central winning by a 2-1 score.

The Ardens played against Weyburn in the girls final. The home town Ardens cruised to an easy 5-0 victory. Goals were scored by Erlandson (2), Andres (2) and Kirkpatrick. The Ardens will now travel to Weyburn on Oct. 29/30 to take part in the 8 team provincial tournament. Good luck Ardens! Thanks to Janna Walker for acting as commissioner for the event.
