The Gull Lake Lions travelled to Loreburn to open the 1A six-man season against the Loreburn/Kenaston Aztecs. The Lions offense came to play in the first quarter, as Gull Lake scored twice: one on a pass and run from Dustin Cooke to Dillon Mueller and the second on a scamper by Cooke. More of the same in the 2nd quarter, as Mitchell Peterson hauled in a pass at 3:42 to extend the Lions’ lead. On their next possession, Jake Anderson scored on a long pass to make the score 26-0 for the Lions. While the score was lopsided, the play was not, as the Aztecs caused the Lions defense to bend—but not break—on many occasions, including a fumble on the Gull Lake 1 yard line.

The Aztecs offense woke up at 9:25 of the 2nd quarter, as Dylan Boyle hauled in a long pass and took it to the house. The Lions responded a minute later, as Jake Anderson scored his 2nd TD of the game. Late in the quarter, Boyle struck again for the Aztecs, making the score 32-14 at the half.

With momentum on their side, the Aztecs charged into the second half. Boyle scored his 3rd TD less then two minutes in and Tavon Bleackley added another to make the score 32-28 heading into the 4th. To make matters worse for the reeling Lions, they lost their starting QB Cooke to an arm injury midway through the 3rd quarter.

The 4th quarter saw both teams play smash-mouth football. Dillon Mueller scored the Lions only points of the 4th before the Aztecs Boyle hit paydirt for the 4th time with under two minutes to play. A fumble, a short kick, a missed field goal. strategic time-outs, the last two minutes had it all. When the final whistle sounded, the Lions had clawed their way to a hard fought 38-37 win. Next up for the Lions, a trip to Outlook to play the LCBI Bisons on September 23.
