Nov. 19/20 was a busy weekend of volleyball as both our boys and girls teams were competing on the provincial trail.

Ponteix had the honor of hosting 3A girls provincials. Teams from all over the province attended with some great volleyball being demonstrated. The gold medal final saw Cutknife defeat Waldheim 2-1 while the bronze medal went to Oxbow who defeated Kipling 2-1. A big thank you to the organizing committee from Ponteix School – they did a fantastic job!

Elsewhere at provincial volleyball, Fox Valley girls had a successful tournament in Milestone. They had a record of 1-1 in their pool with a win over Carlyle and a lose to Holdfast. In the playoff round, the Legends had their first victory over Colonsey 2-0. In the quarter finals, the girls had another victory over Goodsoil 2-0. This put them in the semi final against Holdfast. The girls had an exciting 3 set match losing the first 25-14, winning the second 25-19 and losing the third 25-19. Congrats to the Legends on their 4th place finish!

Meanwhile at the 5A girls’ provincial tournament in North Battleford, the Swift Current Ardens had a tough weekend. The Ardens went 0-3 in their pool then lost in the playoff round to Saskatoon Hardy 2-1.

The Swift Current Colts travelled to Melfort for 5A boys’ provincial action. The Colts ended up second in their pool with wins over Melfort (2-0) and Regina LeBoldus (2-0) but lost an exciting match to Meadow Lake (2-1). In the quarter finals, the Colts came out on the losing end of the match to the eventual bronze medalists Saskatoon St. Joseph’s by a 2-1 margin.

Our 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A boys’ teams were all involved with regional play. At 1A action in Beechy/Lucky Lake, Chinook was represented by 5 teams – Consul, Frontier, Hazlet, Ponteix and Vanguard. In pool A Ponteix (3-0) was 1st while Frontier (2-1) was 2nd. In pool B, Consul was first (3-0) and Vanguard (2-1) was 2nd. Unfortunately, Hazlet did not advance out of their pool with a 0-3 record. The semi’s saw Ponteix defeat Vanguard (2-1) and Frontier defeated Consul (2-1). The all Chinook final saw Frontier defeat Ponteix (2-0) while the third place match saw Vanguard defeat Consul (2-0). This means three teams from Chinook – Frontier, Ponteix and Vanguard – will travel to Allan for the provincial 1A tourney.

Cabri and Fox Valley travelled to Kenaston/Davidson for the 2A regionals. Fox Valley was first in their pool (2-0) with wins over Herbert and Kenaston while Cabri also finished first in Pool B (3-0) with wins over Milestone, Davidson and Glentworth. Both teams won their semi finals – Cabri defeated Davidson (2-0) while Fox Valley defeated Milestone (2-0) setting up another all Chinook final! Fox Valley captured the regional title with a 25-14, 25-21 win over Cabri. Both teams will now advance to provincials in Medstead next weekend.

Lastly Leader Saints travelled to Regina Western Christian for 3A boys regionals. The Saints were first in their pool (3-0) with wins over Eston (2-1), Asquith (2-0) and Eyebrow (2-0). In the semi’s, Leader defeated Asquith (2-0) but lost to Gravelbourg (2-0) in the final. The Saints will now advance to 3A boys provincials in Maidstone.

At 4A regionals in Moose Jaw, Shaunavon Shadows finished second in pool B with a 2-1 record. They had wins over For Qu’Appelle (2-0) and Assiniboia (2-0) but lost to Moose Jaw Riverview (2-0). The Shadows had a heartbreaking lose in the playoffs to Caronport. The match went to three with scores of 25-16, 20-25 and 26-28.

Hats off to all our volleyball teams! We wish Frontier, Ponteix, Vanguard, Cabri, Fox Valley and Leader good luck at their respective provincial tournaments!
