Lots of basketball games played by our senior teams on Jan. 22 and 23.  Along with our regularly scheduled games, teams were trying to make up for cancellations earlier in the season.

In girls play, Gull Lake travelled to Herbert and was defeated 62-6. The Laurels were led by Miranda Redekop with 13 and Rachel Selke with 8 pts.  Mikayla Hassard replied with 5 for the Lady Lions.

Maple Creek girls played two games – they travelled to Swift Current and lost 67-36 against the Jr Ardens.  Kristie Klevgaard and Larissa Markewich led the way for the Ardens both with 12 pts.  Daylynn Knodel responded with 15 and Brittney Kilthau had 12.  Maple Creek then hosted Gull Lake in a make up game losing a close 45-41 decision.  Erika Vallee has 12 pts for the Lady Lions while Brittney Kilthau had 19 for Maple Creek and Shinae Drever added 12.

The final girls’ match of the week saw Frontier go to Shaunavon.  Shaunavon won the close match 62-59.  Shaunavon was led by Shania Sonen with 20 and Renee Wilkins with 14 pts.  Melissa Peacock was the top scorer for the Raiders with 27 while Payton Miller added 20.

The Shaunavon Shadows had two matches.  They played Herbert in the first match and came out with a 100-61 home victory.  Jesse Voll had 28 and Matt Benesh had 26 for the Shadows.  The Laurels were led by Tyler Martens with 15 and Frank Myers with 14.  The Shadows then travelled to Swift Current to take on the Jr Colts in a make up game.  The Shadows remain undefeated in league play with a 93-51 decision.  Matt Benesh had 28 while Jesse Voll had 18 pts.  The Colts were led by Mitch Braun with 13 pts.

The Jr Colts also played two games hosting Maple Creek.  The visiting Rebels walked away with an 82-44 victory.  Maple Creek was led by Landen Bertram with 24 and Graham Gordon with 14.  Mitch Braun was again the top scorer for the Colts with 11.

Teams will take the last week in January off for semester exams and then have a week to finish make up games.  The league playoffs will begin Feb. 12 for both senior boys and girls.

The last league games scheduled for the junior boys and girls will go on January 31.  Playoffs will start February 7 for boys.

Our senior curling playoffs will also start.  Our three sectionals playoffs will be held in:

Whitemud – Shaunavon on February 2
Cypress – Hazlet on February 1 and 2.
Rolling Hills – Gull Lake on February 1 and 2.

Teams will be competing in the boys, girls and mixed category with the top 2 from each advancing to districts on Feb. 8 and 9.

Belated congratulations are also extended to the Shaunavon Shadows senior boys volleyball team and their coaches Mark Benesh and Kyle Hardin on being the selected as the winner of the Sportsmanship Banner in 4A boys volleyball.  Congrats to the Shadows!
