It was the last weekend of volleyball on the SHSAA calendar as the provincial boys’ championships were held. Congratulations goes out to Vanguard Valkyrs and their coaches Stephen McComish and Rob Englot on winning the bronze medal at the 1A boys championship at Colonsay! Vanguard finished first in Pool B with a 4-0 record. They recorded wins over Avonlea (25-12, 25-9), Colonsay (25-15, 25-20), Broadview (24-26, 25-23, 25-20) and Medstead (25-21, 25-19). In Pool A, there were two Chinook teams – Fox Valley and Frontier. Fox Valley finished 3rd with a 2-2 record. The Legends had wins over Frontier (25-21, 25-21) and Annaheim (22-25, 25-19, 25-14) but lost to Dinsmore (25-22, 23-25, 22-25) and Mossbank (18-25, 16-25). Frontier had numerous close matches but finished out of the playoffs with a 0-4 record. In the quarter finals, Fox Valley came upagainst Colonsay and defeated the host team 25-17, 19-25, 25-23. Vanguard beat Annaheim 26-24, 25-23. Both Chinook teams lost in the semi finals. Fox Valley lost to Mossbank (18-25, 23-25) while Vanguard lost to the eventual gold medal winning Medstead (25-18, 17-25, 15-25). The two Chinook teams then met in the bronze medal match where Vanguard won two very close sets 26-24.

At 2A boys’ provincials in Hepburn, another two Chinook teams were taking part – Hazlet/Leader and Ponteix. Both teams finished with 2-2 records to place 3rd in their pools. In Pool A, Hazlet/Leader had wins over Montmarte (25-20, 27-25) and Cudworth (25-22, 25-7). Their losses came against Hepburn (25-22, 14-25, 13-25) and Goodsoil (13-25, 12-25). In Pool B, Ponteix recorded wins over Muenster (25-21, 20-25, 25-17) and Lashburn (25-19, 25-16). They lost to Kahkewistahaw (23-25, 18-25) and Edam (21-25, 19-25). Both teams lost in the quarter finals. Hazlet/Leader lost to Edam (25-19, 15-25, 17-25) while Ponteix lost to Hepburn (16-25, 18-25).

Next up on the sports calendar is basketball. Our SWAC junior and senior basketball leagues will be starting in the first week in December with seniors playing on Tuesday nights and juniors on Thursday nights.
