The SWAC senior and junior basketball league playoffs have started. On the senior side, the #1 seeds Shaunavon Silhouettes and Shadows both advanced to the final with wins over the Swift Current Jr Colts and Jr Ardens on Feb. 11. The host Silhouettes defeated the Jr Ardens by a score of 102-35. Leading the way for the Silhouettes was Becca Hansen with 35 pts and Lacey Pritchard with 20. Kyla Bolton replied with 9 pts for the Ardens. On the boys’ side, it was the Shadows edging the Jr. Colts 78-66. Dean Wilkins had 25 pts and Brock Larsen added 20 for the winning cause. Nathan Braun replied for the Colts with 13.

The other girls’ semi final saw #3 Gull Lake travelling to #2 Herbert. The hometown Laurels prevailed with a 38-27 victory. Stepanie Furseth-Doll led the way with 12 pts and Rachel Selke added 9. The Lady Lions’ top scorer was Kelsey Barsness with 8 pts. The #2 Herbert boys also hosted a semi when they took on #3 seed Maple Creek. The Laurels won by the margin of 73-65. Kurt Robertson had 28 pts while Zeke Barraquio contributed 20. Graham Gordon was the Maple Creek high scorer with 27 pts.

The senior finals will feature both Herbert teams travelling to Shaunavon on Tues, Feb. 25. The girls game is set for 5:30 p.m. with the boys following at 7:00.

SHSAA basketball playoffs begin on Feb. 28/March 1 with conference competition. On the girls’ side:

1A girls – Herbert will host on March 1. Teams participating include Herbert, Holdfast, Harvest City and Gravelbourg. The top 2 will advance.

2A girls – Gull Lake will host at home on Feb. 28/March 1. Teams participating include Gull Lake, Shaunavon, Davidson, LCBI and Hanley. The top 2 will advance.

3A girls – Maple Creek will travel to Assiniboia.

4A girls – Swift Current Ardens will host on Feb. 28/March 1. Teams participating include Lumsden, Regina Johnson, Regina Luther, Moose Jaw Central, Moose Jaw Vanier and Moose Jaw Peacock. The top 4 will advance.

On the boys’ side:

1A boys – Frontier will host on March 1. Teams participating include Frontier, Herbert, Moose Jaw Cornerstone and Coronach. The top 2 will advance.

3A boys – Maple Creek and Shaunavon will play at Rosetown.

4A boys – Swift Current Colts will play at Notre Dame.

Junior basketball playoffs are also occurring. On the boys’ side, #1 seed Maple Creek defeated #4 Waldeck 71-56. The other semi saw #3 Shaunavon upset #2 Swift Current gr 9’s 64-60. The final will now see Shaunavon travel to Maple Creek at a date TBD. The junior girls’ side saw two upsets. The #4 Swift Current Comp gr 9’s edged the #1 Gull Lake team 47-46. The #3 Waldeck team beat #2 Wymark 62-41. The final will be played Thurs, Feb 27 at 4:00 p.m. when Waldeck hosts Swift Current Comp gr 9’s.

The SHSAA regional curling playoffs were held in Moose Jaw on Feb. 14/15. Chinook had 6 teams attending – Swift Current and Cabri mixed, Hodgeville and Maple Creek (team Martin) girls, Swift Current (team Ross) and Maple Creek boys. All the teams played in a double knock event with both the A qualifier and B qualifier advancing to provincials. Congratulations to the Swift Current mixed team and their coach James Kissick on winning the Regional title. They put together 3 straight wins to capture the title defeating Mossbank (5-3), Regina O’Neill (8-6) and Outlook (5-4). The Cabri mixed team will also advance to provincials as they won the B side. The Cabri team started with a win over Moose Jaw Vanier (5-1) but followed this with a loss to Outlook (5-4). This put them on the B side where they put together three straight wins. They beat Dinsmore (9-3), Moose Jaw Vanier (7-3) and had a re-match against Outlook in the B coming out with an 8-1 victory. Both teams will now go to Martensville for SHSAA provincials on Feb. 28 and March 1. Good luck!

Congratulations also goes out to the Hodgeville girls and their coach Mike Francis as they captured the Regional title. The girls put together 3 straight victories with wins over Avonlea (7-2), Regina Campbell (7-6) and Maple Creek (8-3). Maple Creek had a good run as they won their first two games over Gravelbourg (9-3) and Kyle (9-3). Their lose to Hodgeville in the A final dropped them directly to the B final where they lost to Regina Campbell (9-3). Hodgeville girls will now travel to Hanley for provincials on Feb. 28 and March. In the boys’ category, Maple Creek lost two games to Moose Jaw Peacock (6-3) and Kindersley (9-5) and were eliminated. The Swift Current boys lost their first to Avonlea (8-3). They followed this with a win over Marengo (16-1). Their final game ended in a loss to Moose Jaw Peacock 5-4.

Our junior curling playoffs started with sectionals on February 8. Thanks to our hosts: Burstall (comissioners Brenda Garthus and Crystal Haroldson), Shaunavon (commissioner Connie Allemond) and Hodgeville (commissioner Mike Francis). The teams advancing to SWAC District finals include:

Girls – Maple Creek, Hazlet, Hodgeville, Gull Lake, Val Marie and Eastend.

Boys – Maple Creek, Hazlet, Gull Lake, Ponteix, and Eastend.

Open – Maple Creek, Fox Valley, O.M. Irwin, Ponteix, Frontier and Shaunavon.

The junior curling finals will take place on Feb. 28 and March 1st. The girls and boys competition will take place at Val Marie while the open category will be played in Frontier.

Good luck to the Swift Current Comp wrestling team! They will be taking part in SHSAA regional wrestling tournament in Weyburn on Saturday, March 1.
