A busy week in Chinook sports

Congratulations goes out to the Frontier Raiders and their coach Darryl Anderson! The girls captured the 1A bronze medal at the recent SHSAA provincial basketball championships (HOOPLA) in Moose Jaw on March 26. In their first game on Friday, the Raiders were defeated by the eventual gold medalist’s – Central Butte – by a score of 58-40. The girls rebounded on Saturday with a 61-50 win over Lake Lenore to capture the bronze.

Chinook was also represented by the Shaunavon Shadows at the 3A boys level. The boys lost 87-57 in Friday’s game to Clavet. This put them in the bronze final against Moose Jaw Riverview on Saturday. The boys’ lost a heartbreaker 55-54 with .8 second left!

With basketball season drawing to a close, schools have already been playing badminton. Our junior teams will start their playoffs on Saturday, April 2. Hosting schools include Cabri, Herbert, Ponteix and Eastend. Teams will be competing in boys and girls singles, boys and girls doubles as well as mixed doubles. The top teams will then proceed to our Chinook/SWAC championships which will be held on Saturday, April 9 in Maple Creek at the high school as well as Sidney Street school. Action at all badminton playoffs begins at 10:00 a.m.

Our seniors will be competing at their first level of play on Saturday, April 9. Host locations include Cabri, Swift Current and Frontier. Our district championships will be held on Saturday, April 16 at Swift Current Comp beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Belated congratulations to Brady Hymers (Swift Current Comp) who captured the silver medal at SHSAA provincial high school wrestling championships in Saskatoon on March 19. Brady wrestled in the 58 kg. category. Other Swift Current Comp wrestlers who placed included Colton Nelson – 6th in the 75 kg category and Natasha Cleaveley – 6th in the 80 kg category.
